Lynchburg Leads Men's and Women's Standings After First Day

LC's Wilson Wins Two Throwing Events, Norton Sets Meet Record

LEXINGTON, Va. --- Lynchburg College staked itself to an early lead in both the men's and women's standings following the first day of competition at the 2013 ODAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships.  The Hornets lead host Washington and Lee University by just eight points in the women's ranks (57 to 49), while LC's advantage over Bridgewater College in the men's lists sits at 11.333 points heading into the second day of action on Saturday.

Results thru Day 1

Senior thrower Greg Wilson put his stamp on two of Lynchburg's four combined event victories as he captured titles in the shot put (14.51 meters/47' 7.25") and hammer throw (50.59m/165' 11.75").  The two LC wins on the women's side came in the long jump and shot put.  Junior Candice Hairston leapt to 5.28 meters (17' 4.0") from the line to claim the long jump, while senior Kori Penick tossed the shot 12.22 meters (40' 1.0") for her triumph.

Washington and Lee posted two event wins on the women's side.  Sophomore Casey Mackintosh won the inaugural running of the 10,000 meter run in an ODAC championship with a time of 37:58.71.  The crew in Lexington had to go the cameras to determine a winner in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as Generals' seniors Lauren Schultz and Molly Ortiz were virtually tied at 12:00.57.  Schultz got the nod for the top position.

Guilford College posted a pair of wins on the men's side, which included the first meet record of 2013.  Junior Chad Norton set the 3,000-meter steeplechase meet record with a time of 9:23.57, besting the 2012 standard set by Quaker classmate David Cason (9:28.13), who came in second this season in 9:36.64.  Sophomore Andris Goncarovs claimed the first men's 10,000-meter run in championship competition with a time of 32:25.63.

Bridgewater also saw a pair of its athletes top the podium.  Sophomore Brittany Kersey took home the women's high jump title by clearing 1.56 meters (5' 1.25").  On the men's side, freshman Pete Monteleone leapt 6.70 meters (21' 11.75" to win the men's long jump.

The remaining two finals of the day went to athletes from Roanoke College and Eastern Mennonite University.  Maroons' junior Samantha Clowser won the women's hammer throw with a heave of 45.38 meters (148' 10.75").  Royals' sophomore Jordan King was victorious in the men's high jump with a mark of 1.93 meters (6' 4.0").
