Lynchburg, Bridgewater Repeat as Outdoor Track & Field Team Championships

LYNCHBURG, Va. --- One title race was a runaway while the other was a nail-biter that came down to the last event as action closed amid further threatening weather at the 2019 ODAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships. By the end of day two at Randolph College in Lynchburg, Va., the team champions were familiar sights with the University of Lynchburg women hoisting a second straight women's trophy and Bridgewater College repeating as men's champion with its fourth crown in the past five year.

The Eagles earned the men's title by the narrowest of margins, topping Washington and Lee University by one point at 180-to-179. It was just the second time in league history that the men's competition was decided by one point, joining Bridgewater's 102-to-101 triumph over host Lynchburg in 1997.

There was much less drama on the women's side of the ledger. Lynchburg, a heavy favorite entering the weekend based on the TFRI ratings published by the USTFCCCA, lived up to its top billing by racking up 222 points. Bridgewater finished second with 146 tallies.

Eight individual honors were bestowed to seven athletes following some stellar performances. Washington and Lee first-year multi-athlete Joe O'Connor took home both the ODAC Men's Field Athlete of the Meet and ODAC Men's Rookie of the Year awards. Bridgewater senior sprinter and jumper Davonta Womack earned ODAC Men's Track Athlete of the Meet, doubling up on the recognition after earning the same distinction at the indoor championships.

Roanoke College senior thrower Jennifer Calascione took home ODAC Women's Field Athlete of the Meet laurels, while Bridgewater junior mid-distance/distance runner Calista Ariel walked away with the ODAC Women's Track Athlete of the Meet honor. Lynchburg first-year sprinter Jessica Cammarata received ODAC Women's Rookie of the Year accolades.

Lynchburg mentor Jim Sprecher took home ODAC Women's Coach of the Year honors, while W&L's Brandon Uhl earned the ODAC Men's Coach of the Year award from his peers. The ODAC sports information directors tabbed W&L senior Hank Patrick and Lynchburg senior Samantha Schreiber as the ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athletes of the Year.

Records were broken or tied in four events across both ranks, some more than once. One of the more impressive feats came in the men's 4x100-meter relay. Not only did the winning team of Diante Cannon, Dirk Jones, Alex Galloway, and Davonta Womack eclipse the ODAC overall (41.21) and championship (41.73) records with a time of 0:41.16, but the units from Lynchburg and Washington and Lee also cracked the championship mark at 0:41.64 and 0:41.71, respectively.

Bridgewater's Jamie Hiegel accounted for the remaining men's new standard as his time of 14:52.68 in the 5,000-meter run set a new championship record.

On the women's side, Ariel put her name next to the championship record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, eclipsing the previous mark of 11:22.19 with an 11:11.53 performance on Saturday morning. For the second straight year, a competitor tied the women's high jump standard. Eastern Mennonite's Michaela Chowning flopped over the bar at 1.69 meters, tying former Royal standout Emily Hollet and current Roanoke national qualifier Mara Briggs for the championship record.

Nine athletes won the same event for a second straight season, including seven women's competitors. Three Eagles turned the trick via Ariel in the steeplechase, Emily Valle in the 400-meter hurdles (1:04.66), and Tye Meador in the long jump (5.76m). Lynchburg's Endasia Mitchell and Rachel Murray doubled up in the 400-meter dash (58.57) and javelin (38.59m), respectively, while Roanoke's Calascione and Nicole Moughrabi did the same in the discus (40.23m) and hammer (42.52m). Each of those seven marks were improvements on their 2018 championship postings.

In the men's ranks, Hiegel won the 10,000-meter run for a second straight season, as did Womack in the long jump (7.24m). Hiegel's 2019 time was a little behind is 2018 watch-stopper, while Womack's leap proved longer this year than last.
