Big First Half Paves Way to 11th ODAC Crown
LEXINGTON, Va. --- The top-seeded and
15th-ranked Washington and Lee women’s lacrosse
team opened with seven unanswered goals and never looked back as it
claimed its eighth ODAC Championship in the last 10 years with a
14-6 victory over Lynchburg College in the conference title game on
Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.
The Generals (13-4) assumed a 7-0 lead with 17:25 remaining in the
first half as four different players found the net, including
junior midfielder Emmy Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) and
senior attacker Meredith Freeman (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS), who scored
two goals each.
Lynchburg (14-4) registered its first goal of the game at the 14:21
mark as junior midfielder Lindsay Gengras (Avon, Conn./Avon) scored
on a free position shot, but W&L struck just nine seconds later
off an unassisted tally from senior attacker Britten Mathews
(Richmond, Va./Collegiate) to take an 8-1 lead and the Generals
held a 9-1 lead at the break.
The Hornets had a late-game rally, registering four consecutive
tallies from four different players to pull within six goals (12-6)
with 7:11 remaining in the game. However, they could get no closer
as the Generals added two markers late in the game to claim the
eight-goal victory and earn their 11th ODAC title and
the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III
Tournament.
W&L was paced by Emmy Mathews, Britten Mathews and sophomore
attacker Maddie McKaig (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis), who finished
with three goals apiece. Emmy Mathews and Britten Mathews each
added an assists, while McKaig finished with two helpers. Junior
Katharine Farrar (Lexington, Va./Episcopal) played the entirety in
net, stopping nine shots.
Lynchburg was led by Gengras, who finished the contest with three
goals and one assist. The Hornets also received goals from
first-year midfielders Julie Will (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright)
and Meredith Stuart (Chapel Hill, N.C./Pomfret School), and junior
midfielder Patty Sheahan (Lutherville, Md./St. Timothy’s).
Sophomore netminder Christina Tran (Sterling, Va./Severn) played
all 60:00, collecting eight saves.
The Generals will return to action next Saturday as they host
Christopher Newport for senior day. Game time is slated for 2:00
pm.
