R-MC Defeats RC, 15-13, in ODAC Quarterfinals

SALEM, Va. --- Junior Betsy Hebert and sophomore Katie Russo both had three goals and one assist as fifth-seeded Randolph-Macon defeated No. 4 Roanoke, 15-13, Tuesday evening in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Women's Lacrosse Tournament.

The Yellow Jackets (10-7) will play at top-seeded Washington and Lee in the ODAC semifinals on Saturday, April 26 at 1 p.m.

As it did a season ago, R-MC lost to Roanoke during the regular season and defeated the Maroons in the first round of the ODAC Tournament. The Yellow Jackets lost 22-14 at Roanoke this past Saturday to conclude the regular season.

R-MC never trailed in the contest, scoring five of the game's first six goals in the initial eight minutes. Senior Audrey Hester netted two of her first three goals during that early rally. The Yellow Jackets stretched the lead to six at 10-4 with eight minutes remaining in the period. The Maroons scored the next two goals before Hebert had a goal and assisted on another before the end of the half as R-MC took a 12-6 advantage at intermission.

Roanoke tallied five of the first six goals in the second period to narrow the margin to two at 13-11. Russo logged her third goal with 9:19 left to make it 14-11. Roanoke scored 30 seconds later to cut the margin back to two at 14-12. Sophomore Jenelle Whitman found the back of the net on an assist by Russo with 6:37 left to extend the margin to 15-13. The Maroons scored the game's final goal with just over six minutes left to make the final 15-13.

Whitman had two goals and one assist for R-MC. She also led the Yellow Jackets with five ground balls and nine draw controls.

Roanoke was led in scoring by Allison Bonanno, who scored four goals in the game, notching two assists as well. Darragh Evarts and Claire Feeny each finished with three goals on the night.  Feeney led the team in draw controls with seven, while Evarts had three. Lauren Curtin played all 60 minutes in goal, tallying 14 saves.
