LEXINGTON, Va. –-- Top-seeded Washington and Lee held off a 9-1 Randolph-Macon run over the final 21:24 of the game to post a close 16-15 victory over the Yellow Jackets and advance to the ODAC Championship for the 14th consecutive year.
With the Generals up 15-6 with 22:21 left to play, the Yellow Jackets rattled off seven unanswered tallies to pull within three goals with 5:47 left on the clock. Sophomore attacker Shannon Jamieson and sophomore midfielder Jenelle Whitman led the run with two goals apiece, including a man-down score.
Senior attacker Greta Witter ended the Yellow Jackets run with her third marker of the game at the 2:43 mark to give the Blue and White a four-goal advantage (16-12).
R-MC (10-8) responded with a 3-0 spurt in a span of 1:06 to pull within one goal (16-15) with 50 seconds left in the game. Junior midfielder Sammy Yates won the ensuing draw control for the Generals, as they were able to hold on to the ball and secure the win.
W&L (15-2) took control of the game early, scoring 11 goals in the first period to take an 11-4 advantage into the intermission. Senior attacker Margaret Klein led the Generals, scoring all five of her goals in the first 21:28 of the contest.
For the game, W&L held a 26-22 edge in ground balls, while the Yellow Jackets controlled the draw circle, recording a 22-11 advantage over the Generals.
Klein led the Generals' attack with a season-high five goals, while Witter added three tallies and two assists. First-year attacker Sara Holland chipped in two goals in the win. Senior Leanne Stone paced the back-line with a team-high six ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Jamieson netted a team-high four markers to lead R-MC, while Whitman recorded three goals and one assist. Whitman also tallied five ground balls, nine draw controls, and one caused turnover.
The Generals advance to the ODAC Championship game and will face the winner of the No. 2 Shenandoah/No. 3 Guilford game next Saturday in Lexington.
