Washington and Lee Wins 16th ODAC Women's Lacrosse Title

LEXINGTON, Va. --- The 10th-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team scored five straight goals over a span of 25 minutes en route to claiming the 2015 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship with an 8-7 victory over Randolph-Macon on Saturday at Watt Field.  

The second-seeded Yellow Jackets (14-4) held a 3-1 lead with 13:05 left in the first stanza, but goals by sophomore midfielderHollis Tardy (Dallas, Texas /The Hockaday School ) and sophomore midfielder Corinne Wood (Phoenix, Md. / Dulaney) evened the score at 3-3 at intermission.

The top-seeded Generals (15-2) took their first lead of the contest (4-3) when sophomore midfielder Olivia Sisson (Great Falls, Va. / Langley) scored off of a free position shot at the 27:45 mark of the second half.

Senior midfielder Sammy Yates (Ridgewood, N.J. / Ridgewood) capped the W&L scoring spurt, recording the next two goals. She found the back of the net at the 20:53 mark off of a feed from first-year attacker Jess Castelo (Red Bank, N.J. / Lawrenceville School) and then Yates notched another goal at the 13:53 mark (6-3).

Randolph-Macon tallied its first goal in over 30 minutes of action when first-year midfielder Alicia Hsieh (Ellicott City, Md. / Centennial) registered her second goal of the game with 12:45 on the clock to cut W&L's lead to two (6-4).

Yates notched her third goal of the contest at the 10:46 mark off of an assist from Castelo, and then Castelo pushed the Blue and White lead to 8-4 on a unassisted goal just 2:20 later in the game.

The Yellow Jackets closed the contest on a 3-0 run. Junior attacker Shannon Jamieson (Cypress, Texas / Cypress-Woods) and Hsieh scored off of free position shots with 4:10 and 48 seconds remaining on the clock. Sophomore midfielder Susie Snee (Bel Air, Md. / John Carroll) tallied the final marker of the game with 26 seconds left in the contest.

Randolph-Macon won the final draw control, but Yates forced a turnover with under 15 seconds left to seal the victory.

For the game, W&L held an advantage in shots (23-14) and ground balls (18-12), but R-MC held an edge in draw controls (10-6).

Senior goalkeeper Cara Mulligan (Glen Ridge, N.J. / Glen Ridge) played the entire contest and registered four saves. Sophomore goalie Allie Walker (Towson, Md. / Mercy) saw all 60 minutes of action and finished with nine saves.

Yates led the Generals' offense with three goals, while Castelo logged one goal and dished out two assists.

Hsieh paced the Yellow Jackets' with three tallies. Junior midfielder Jenelle Whitman (Silver Spring, Md. / Springbrook) had a game-high six draw controls.

The Generals have now won a conference-best 16 ODAC Championships, including the last six. With the win, W&L earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament, and will learn whom it plays when the selection show airs Sunday at 9:30 pm on NCAA.com.
