Generals Claim 24th ODAC Women's Tennis Title

AMHERST, Va. --- The 20th ranked and top-seeded Washington and Lee women's tennis team claimed a 5-0 win over second-seeded Roanoke in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship match on Sunday at Sweet Briar College.

The conference title was W&L's 12th straight and the 24th in the 31 years that the ODAC has awarded a women's tennis championship.

After sweeping the doubles round, 3-0, the Generals went on to record victories at No. 4 and 6 singles positions for the win. Senior captain Claire Cahill (Austin, Texas / Lake Travis) and sophomore Mary Elizabeth Shutley (Marietta, Ga. / Marist School) each registered two wins on the day. Cahill teamed up with first-year Brooke Donnelly (Kennesaw, Ga. / Marietta) at No. 2 doubles for an 8-4 win and also took the win at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-1. Shutley joined junior Allison Hupalo (Weston, Mass. / Weston) for an 8-3 victory at No. 3 doubles and then notched a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles.

With the win, the Generals earn an automatic bid to the Division III NCAA Tournament, which will begin on May 9 at selected on-campus sites. The NCAA will release the team selections on May 5 at 7:00 pm on NCAA.com and the individual selections on May 7 at 7:00 pm on NCAA.com.
