Generals Earn 20th Straight ODAC Women's Tennis Title

LEXINGTON, Va. --- The 22nd-ranked Washington and Lee women's tennis team defeated Sweet Briar, 5-0, on Sunday to capture it's 20th consecutive ODAC title.

W&L (18-6) first-year Lauren Long (Carmel, Ind. / Park Tudor) and junior Gabi Moss (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Chaparral) claimed the first team point with a strong 8-1 win at the top position, before juniors Margaret Carlton (Matthews, N.C. / Charlotte Christian) and Izzy Koziol (Wilton, Conn. / Wilton) finished shortly after at No. 2 with an 8-2 decision.

At No. 3, Sweet Briar's (18-8) duo of Maria Caro and Nikita Simhambhatla found themselves down to first-years Riho Iijima (Portland, Ore. / Westview) and Grace Lorenz (Oklahoma City, Okla. / Epic Charter Schools), 5-1, but they battled back to trail by a 7-6 score. Iijima and Lorenz then locked down W&L's 3-0 lead through doubles play with a win in the following game.

Moss and Long tallied two final two team points in singles play with straight-set wins at the top two positions. Long dropped just two games in the first set at No. 1 before sweeping Ruth de Souza in the second set, while Moss surrendered just one game in both sets. Long's sweep of de Souza at No. 1 was the clinching point of the match for the Generals.

With the win, the Generals earn the ODAC's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Championship. The site and opponent will be revealed on Monday.
