R-MC Tops Lynchburg in Quarterfinals, Set to Host Final Four

ASHLAND, Va. --- Senior Riley Martin (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle) recorded 19 assists and sophomore Erin Quinn (Morrisville, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) added 18 assists as the top-seeded Randolph-Macon volleyball team downed No. 8 Lynchburg 3-0 Wednesday evening in the ODAC quarterfinals in Crenshaw Gymnasium.

The Yellow Jackets (23-7) earned the right to host the remainder of the ODAC Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 7. The semifinals will be at 10 a.m. (#1 R-MC vs. #4 Roanoke) and 12:30 p.m. (#2 Virginia Wesleyan vs. #3 Washington and Lee), with the winners meeting in the championship game at 5 p.m.

R-MC took the opening game 25-22, won the second 25-23 and dominated in the finale 25-12.

The Hornets (8-18) kept Game 1 close. LC built an 8-6 lead before a 10-3 run by the home team gave R-MC a 16-11 advantage. The Hornets had a 5-1 spurt to trail 17-16. The Yellow Jackets held a slight 23-22 lead before scoring the final two points to take the opener.

After giving up the first point in Game 2, R-MC scored five straight to take a 5-1 advantage. The Yellow Jackets led 9-7 before tallying four in row for a 13-7 lead. The home team was up 20-15 before LC got four straight to pull within one. R-MC scored twice to take a 22-19 lead. The Hornets pulled within one at 24-23 before the Yellow Jackets nailed the final point to claim the second game.

LC was close again early in Game 3, holding a 7-6 lead. R-MC used a 15-2 spurt to take a commanding 21-9 advantage on its way to a 25-12 victory in the final game.

Senior Courtney Lowers (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond River) paced the Yellow Jackets with 10 kills and added 10 digs. Seniors Addie Cooper (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry), Emily Ortiz (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) and Katie Rossberg (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle) each registered eight kills. Sophomore Samantha Sallade (Newport News, Va./Peninsula Catholic) led all players with 14 digs.

Jennifer Garrett led Lynchburg with 10 kills, while Kelly Layne added six winners.  Lynn Walsh dished out 14 assists, and Sam Page led the back line with 11 digs.  Hannah Wolf stood tall at the net with five total blocks.
