Randolph-Macon Wins ODAC Volleyball Championship

ASHLAND, Va. --- Randolph-Macon continued its strong play against ODAC opponents on Saturday afternoon, completing a straight-sets run thru the conference tournament that included a 3-0 victory over Washington and Lee for the ODAC title in Ashland. The championship is the fifth overall and second straight for the Yellow Jackets.

The win also awards them the ODAC's automatic qualifier into the NCAA Division III Volleyball Tournament. The field of 64 teams will be announced on Monday, November 7, at 12:30 p.m. ET via an Internet selection show on www.ncaa.com.

Randolph-Macon (23-7) took off quickly with two points off of service aces, but Washington and Lee (24-10) quickly found its footing. The two squads remained relatively tight throughout much of the set, with several ties dotting the play-by-play. W&L forged ahead, 21-19, late in the frame. Following a timeout from head coach Bill Rogers, Randolph-Macon finished on a run of six straight points to wrap up the opening stanza, 25-21.

The second stanza began with another quick start from the Yellow Jackets, but this opening fury was more prolonged than the first. R-MC owned an 18-6 lead at one point with W&L trying both a combination of timeouts and some rotation tweaks to slow its opponents momentum. The Generals did find some success late-on, but a kill from Rebecca McGilvery put a cap on a 25-12 win for R-MC and a 2-0 advantage heading to what would become the final frame.

Many times in matches, a particular side of the court seems to hold more success for both teams when progressing thru a match. But such was not the case for Randolph-Macon as they continued to push down the pedal back on their orginal starting side. R-MC put point on the board in bunches, cruising to a 20-9 lead before W&L squeezed a few couple of tallies. But a dramatic comeback would not be in the Generals' cards as a service error sealed the championship for Randolph-Macon with a 25-14 win in the final set and its third 3-0 match victory over the tournament.

Freshman Miranda Hall led all players with 15 kills and a .345 attack percentage. McGilvery chipped in nine winners and eight digs, while Erin Quinn dished out 30 assists for an even 10.0 per set average. Colleen Beaver posted six total blocks, leading a R-MC net-defensive unit that registered 18 blocks.

Meg Guignon led W&L with five kills on an off attacking afternoon (-.061 team percentage) for the Generals. Allison Webb adde four winners. Mackenzie Shand totaled six blocks.

The Yellow Jackets are off to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season. In 2015, R-MC made the deepest volleyball run in program history, reaching the round of eight.  Tune to www.ncaa.com on Monday (11/7) at 12:30 p.m. ET for the selection show.
