Hornets Headed Back to NCAA Tournament
LYNCHBURG, Va. --- Lynchburg College
junior Ryan Renfro (Forest, VA/Brookville) scored two
goals as the Lynchburg's men's soccer team defeated Hampden-Sydney
for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) title by a score of
5-1 on Saturday.
Junior Jordan Clark (Richmond, VA/Monacan) scored the
first goal for the Hornets at 8:38 of the first half off a corner
kick from juniorShane Spanninger (Horsham,
PA/Hatboro-Horsham) to put Lynchburg up 1-0.
Hampden-Sydney though would tie it up shortly at 11:18 as Chris
Whiteside netted it to score the game at 1-1. Renfro though scored
two goals back-to-back less than two minutes apart at 34:30 and
36:26. Junior Kyle Symczak (Woodbridge,
VA/Woodbridge) assisted on the first goal and
senior Donald Hart III (Springfield, VA/Paul VI) fed the
second goal to put Lynchburg up 3-1 late in the first half.
At 64:42, Hart took a pass from senior Stephen Brooks
(Fairfax, VA/Paul VI) to put Lynchburg up 4-1. SeniorMichael
Abbonizio (Maple Glen, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) scored at 68:15 off
a feed from senior Zach Ward (Haymarket,
VA/Battlefield) to give the Hornets a 5-1 lead to end the
game.
Freshman Michael Releford (Blacksburg,
VA/Blacksburg) played 79:08 and made six saves. Hampden-Sydney
goalkeeper John Robert Plyer made seven saves on the day.
Lynchburg (15-4-1) is awarded an automatic bid into the
Division-III NCAA Tournament and will now wait to see where they
are headed. The announcement will be made on Monday. Further
