VWC Men's Soccer Tops LC, 1-0, in Quarterfinal Action

LYNCHBURG, Va. --- Brian Cornell netted a goal in the 17th minute to lift Virginia Wesleyan College to a 1-0 win over Lynchburg College in the quarterfinals of the 2012 ODAC men's soccer tournament.

It was the first elimination of teams seeded in the top four in the tournament as Lynchburg entered as the No. 3 seed, while VWC was the No. 6 seed. Virginia Wesleyan advances to the semifinals for the fourth time in the past five years, playing on Wednesday, Oct. 31, at No. 2 seeded Washington and Lee University at a time to be announced.

Virginia Wesleyan (8-9-1) and Lynchburg (7-7-4) battled through an evenly played game the entire night.  Both teams finished with 17 shots and VWC finished with a slim, 4-3, edge in corner kicks.

Cornell scored his eighth goal of the season on a rebound shot, after a shot by sophomore Isaac Arrington was blocked in front of the net.  Josh Kemp set it up on a corner kick.

Rookie Jake Burtch finished with four saves for the Marlins.  Mike Releford emerged with seven saves for Lynchburg, which had a four-game winning streak snapped with the loss.
