LYNCHBURG, Va. --- Top-seeded Randolph College
defeated Guilford College, 1-0, in the quarterfinals of the Old
Dominion Athletic Conference men's soccer tournament. The WildCats
advance to the semifinals where they will take on fourth-seeded
Washington and Lee University on Wednesday.
For the fourth time in as many years, Randolph will be in the ODAC
semifinals.
The WildCats (16-1-1) dominated possession and took 38 shots,
compared to the seven by Guilford (6-9-3). Only nine of the 38 got
on cage, however, but a pair of back-to-back shots on goal netted
the game-winner.
First-year Troy Jurney lived up to his billing as tonight's
WildCat to Watch, creating a chance down the far wing. When the
reserve's shot slipped through the hands of the keeper, junior
Julian Khalili was there to finish it off, putting the WildCats up
for good.
In the second minute, seniors Jacob Lusczek and John Adams teamed
up to create a golden opportunity, but the shot was saved.
Senior John Vecchietti took a long rip, which required a diving save just over halfway through the first half.
Later, a clear by first-year Blake Heatherly set up senior Corey Sindle, who fed the ball off to Lusczek.
The mohawk-sporting forward dropped the ball to Adams, but the shot at a mostly open net went just high.
Undoubtedly, the best chance to double the lead came when first-year Kyle Unruh drew a foul in the box with 13:24 left on the clock.
The penalty by senior Joe Skaja was saved, however, forcing the WildCats to keep up their defense.
There was a brief run from Guilford late, but a shot by Robert
Sandidge was blocked by a sliding Nick Reemtsen. After the senior's
stop conceded a corner, a header by Jake Elsey went just high.
The WildCats will next host Washington and Lee on Wednesday at 7
p.m., in the ODAC semifinals. Should they win that game, the
WildCats will host either Lynchburg or Virginia Wesleyan in the
ODAC title game next Saturday.
