VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. --- Virginia Wesleyan
College's men's soccer team scored three goals in the second half
Wednesday en route to posting a thrilling 4-2 victory over
Lynchburg College in a semifinal contest in the Old Dominion
Athletic Conference (ODAC) championship tournament.
The Marlins (15-4-1), undefeated in their last 10 contests, advance
to the ODAC championship game for the second consecutive year and
16th overall. VWC, the No. 2 seed, will face No. 1 seed Randolph
College (17-1-1) on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. on the WildCats'
field. Randolph defeated No. 4 seed Washington and Lee
University to advance to the title game.
Lynchburg (11-6-2), the only team to defeat Randolph this season,
trailed early against VWC after Josh Kemp stunned the Hornets
with a running shot from 20 yards out on the left in the 12th
minute.
The Hornets did not get many offensive breaks in the first half,
but capitalized on two of them to forge into the lead. Tim Clancy
tied the game with a short shot into the middle of the net after
winning a battle for the ball with Marlin goalie Connor
Kirkham in the 33rd minute. Seven minutes later Lynchburg
owed a 2-1 advantage when Michael Venegas connected on a solid shot
from 10 yards out, assisted by Ben Grossfuss.
Lynchburg rode momentum into halftime with the lead, only to see it
rerouted early in the second half. Junior Isaac
Arrington scored the first of his game-changing back-to-back goals
in just 10 seconds into play. He rolled down the right side,
took a pass from Travis Walke, and fired the ball past the
goalie and into the left end of the net to tie the game.
Virginia Wesleyan regained the lead for good in the 59th minute with Arrington leading the way again. This time he scored from left to right, firing the ball into the net off an assist by Kemp.
The Marlins iced the win in the 86th minute when Walke connected on a shot from about six yards out, hitting it over the goalie. Zach Landis assisted on the score.
Virginia Wesleyan outshot Lynchburg 22-9 and posted an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Jonathan Sheffield finished with six saves for Lynchburg, while Kirkham recorded four for VWC.
