Generals Win Five Events, Set Another Record
GREENSBORO, N.C. --- Washington and Lee
University extended its lead over Randolph-Macon College after
winning five of the seven events competed during the second day of
the 2012 ODAC Swimming Championships. The Generals own a
658-489 lead over the Yellow Jackets heading into Sunday's final
day of action. Sweet Briar College jumped into third place
with 244 points, while Bridgewater College is nipping at the
Vixens' heels with 239 points.
Yet another ODAC meet and overall record fell at the Greensboro
Aquatic Center on Saturday, marking the third new standard
established in two days. Washington and Lee's 800-yard relay
team of Delaney Rolfe (pictured), Lauren Starnes, Lauren Kasoff and
Meredith Hardy won the day's final event in 7:49.01, 6.3 seconds
faster than the previous mark set in 2010. Both Rolfe and
Starnes were members of that W&L relay team as well.
While the 800-relay was the day's last event, Saturday's finals
began with Washington and Lee winning the 200-yard medley relay in
1:49.45. The team of Jocelyn Cassada, Dana Fredericks,
Caroline Hamp and Izzy Brassfield out-paced Randolph-Macon
(1:50.81) and Sweet Briar (1:56.51) for the Generals' third relay
victory.
Greensboro College's Emma Phillips won her second title of the
Championships by almost four seconds as she completed the 400-yard
individual medley in a time of 4:38.10. W&L's Kasoff
(4:42.09) and Hannah Melkun (4:44.32) claimed second and third.
Washington and Lee and Randolph-Macon commanded the top five places
in the 100-yard butterfly. Hamp scored her first individual
event win in a time of 59.78, and she was followed by teammate
Brittany Ross (1:00.25). The Yellow Jackets picked up some
points when Virginia Mauch (1:01.36), Lizzy Buckley (1:01.56) and
Elizabeth Nordquist (1:02.54) stopped the watches in the next three
places. Bridgewater's Shannon Myers (1:02.75) finished just
outside the top five.
R-MC's Sarah Almond won her second event of the meet and seventh
overall ODAC individual title when she clocked in with a winning
time of 1:55.37 in the 200-yard freestyle. In a feat almost
identical to that of 50-yard freestyle on day one, Washington and
Lee secured the next four finishing positions with Hardy (1:55.96),
Rolfe (1:56.23), Starnes (1:57.26) and Brassfield (1:59.50) beating
R-MC's Rebecca Stevenson (1:59.93) and Ellie Shea (1:59.94) to the
wall.
Dana Fredericks added to Washington and Lee's success in the
100-yard breaststroke. She touched the wall in 1:07.47, less
than a second in front for Randolph-Macon's Kellianne Mullin
(1:08.32). W&L's Melkun (1:09.38) and Erin Schwartz
(1:10.65) finished third and fifth, split by R-MC's Kelsey
Bagley-Hall (1:10.54). Sweet Briar's Marian Huber (1:11.76)
finished sixth.
W&L's Cassada came up .65-seconds short of setting a new record
in the 100-yard backstroke as she posted a winning time of 58.73.
Fellow General Katie Salvati (1:00.45) finished second and
was followed by R-MC's Elizabeth Plowman (1:02.28) and Emily Maltby
(1:02.45). BC's Myers came in fifth in 1:04.45.
Six events remain for Sunday's final day of action, although only
five will be competed in the preliminaries that begin at 10:00 a.m.
The 1,650-yard freestyle will only be competed in the
evening's finals, which begin at 5:30 p.m. The rest of the
schedule consists of the 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle,
200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly and 400-yard freestyle
relay.
