E&H's Nolte, W&L's Thetford Take Home Top Honors
GREENSBORO, N.C. --- For the second time in as many seasons, Washington and Lee University left the Greensboro Aquatic Centers with a pair of trophies as the Generals won both the men's and women's titles at the 2016 ODAC Swimming Championships. W&L collected 1,030.5 points to capture its ninth straight and 26th overall women's crown, while 1,036.0 proved the Generals' winning total in the men's ranks to wrap up the second season of ODAC men's swimming.
Championship Results
A combination of 51 conference championship and overall records were set over three days of competition in Greensboro, N.C. Thirty-two new standards were established in preliminary and/or finals action in th women's competition, with the remaining 19 records occuring throughout the six sessions of races on the men's side.
Emory & Henry College junior Michaela Nolte and Washington and Lee sophomore Tommy Thetford were involved in 22 new record-swims, helping both earn ODAC Swimmer of the Year honors. Nolte won the 50-yard freestyle (0:23.90), 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.50) and 200-yard breastroke (2:20.07). Twice she set league marks in the 200-breaststroke, while her time of 1:03.97 in the preliminaries of the 100-breaststroke set a new conference standard. She earned NCAA B-cut qualification in both events. Thetford claimed individual gold in all three freestyle disciplines, highlighted by times of 0:19.72 and 0.19.70 in the 50-yard freestyle, the latter time occurring in the prelminaries. That marked secured Thetford's position at the upcoming NCAA Division III Championships by eclipsing the NCAA A-cut mark. He came close to duplicating the effort in the 100-yard (0:43.95) and 200-yard (1:37.76) freestyles. Thetford also joined his teammates in winning four relays in record-breaking time -- 200-yard (1:22.38) and 400-yard (3:03.82) freestyle relays and 200-yard (1:31.79) and 400-yard (3:23.90) medley relays.
Washington and Lee mentor Kami Gardner received both ODAC men's and women's Coach of the Year awards. The Generals won 14 events in the women's ranks, with another 13 victories the men's races.
The Generals' also featured both ODAC Rookie of the Year honors, with Elle Chancey and Sam Childress securing the accolades. Chancey's efforts included a record-breaking win in the 100-yard freestyle via a NCAA B-cut time of 0:51.67, as well as swimming as the anchor leg on the 200-yard (1:35.81) and 400-yard (3:28.49) freestyle relays and 200-yard (1:45.46) and 400-yard (3:52.40) medley relays. Childress set a meet record in winning the 500-yard freestyle (4:42.46). He also served as the anchor leg on the winning 800-yard freestyle relay squad (7:00.71).
Randolph-Macon College's Josh Carter and W&L's Stephanie Foster garnered the ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete awards from the conference's sports information directors. Bridgewater College's Emily Townsend received the Bonnie Kestner Sportsmanship Award.
