Lynchburg Wins 11th ODAC Women's Soccer Title

Hornets Earn Automatic Bid to NCAA Tournament

LYNCHBURG, Va. --- The third-seeded Lynchburg College women's soccer team successfully defended its Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) title Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 victory over #4 Bridgewater College in the conference tournament finals. The victory gives the Hornets their third-straight ODAC title, the fifth in the last six seasons, and the 11th in program history.

The Hornets dominated the first 35 minutes of play, but only could convert one scoring opportunity. Senior Kristen Melchiori fired a high shot at 4:51 that deflected off the Eagle keeper's fingers and went into the net. Junior Angela Bosco was awarded an assist on the play.

Lynchburg had a few chances to extend the lead, including a header by sophomoreDessi Dupuy at the 31-minute mark that Lindsay McDole kept out of the net with a diving save. The last 10 minutes of the period belonged to Bridgewater, but Hornet senior keeper Audrey Moore made a sliding save on an excellent scoring opportunity by Eagle junior Melanie Waters to keep the lead at one heading into intermission.

McDole made three saves in the first 15 minutes of the second half before LC struck again. Senior Rachel Sadowski got the play started with a nifty move to clear the ball across midfield and Dupuy eventually got the ball in the box. Dupuy fed sophomoreDana Nelsen who found the back of the net. Moore made two saves in the next few minutes and the Hornet defense made the two-goal lead stand up.

Lynchburg held a 25-5 lead in shots and took all five corner kicks in the game. McDole made nine saves for the Eagles, while Moore made four stops.

The Eagles finish the season 12-7-2.

Lynchburg (19-0-3) earns the ODAC automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament, starting next week. The NCAA selection show is scheduled to air Monday at 1:30 p.m. via this link: http://www.ncaa.com/live/player?vid=2012/563&date=2012/11/05.
