Lynchburg Hoists Sixth Straight ODAC Championship Trophy

LYNCHBURG, Va. --- The Lynchburg College women's soccer team earned its sixth-straight Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) title Sunday in a 1-1 double overtime tie against Roanoke College, outscoring the Maroons 5-3 in penalty kicks to determine the champion. LC earns the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament, and will find out all of the details of NCAA post-season play on the NCAA selection show Monday at 1 p.m.

Roanoke got on the scoreboard first, as Anna Carter took a pass from Kirstin Figel, turned and fired a shot from 20 yards out and into the net just five minutes into play. The Hornets countered quickly at the 7:20 mark, as senior Morgan Singer looped a cross behind the Maroon defense and senior Jade Woll knocked it in to tie the game.

The remainder of the first half was closely contested, but neither team could find the back of the net. The Hornets put the pressure on in the second half and in each of the two 10-minute overtime 'Golden Goal' periods, but the Roanoke defense bent but didn't break. LC outshot the visitors 21-3 after intermission and had an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.

After a winner couldn't be determined in 110 minutes of play, the game went into penalty kicks to decide a champion with five shots apiece. After each team scored on its first chance, LC freshman Caitlin Mertens' shot hit off the crossbar and bounced back into the box. The backspin on the ball was just enough to bring it back towards the goal and trickle across the goal line to put the Hornets ahead 2-1 in the shootout. The teams traded shootout goals until LC led 4-3 and Hornet keeper Tess Frelick turned away a Maroon attempt to give Lynchburg the edge. Hornet senior Sarah Schrader knocked in the fifth and deciding PK goal to give Lynchburg the conference title.

Lynchburg out-shot Roanoke (11-7-3) 32-6 for the game and had a 12-1 edge in corner kicks. Maroon senior goalie Sarah Dvorak made 12 saves to keep her team in the game.

The Hornets (19-2-2), ranked #13 in NCAA Division III this week, earn their ninth-straight trip into the NCAA Division III Tournament.  The selection show is scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday here.
