Garrett’s Late Strike Sends the ’Cats to the ODAC Quarters

HARRISONBURG, Va. --- Patricia Garrettscored the only goal of the game in 72ndminute, giving the ninth-seeded Randolph College women's soccer team a 1-0 win on Monday night.  The WildCats defeated eighth-seeded Eastern Mennonite University in the First Round of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) tournament.

The win was the first ODAC tournament win for Randolph since 1985, when the school was known as Randolph-Macon Woman's College.  It is also only the third ODAC tournament win in history.

The two teams were very familiar with each other, having played on the same field less than a week ago, and it showed throughout.  It took almost 13 minutes for either team to register a shot, with Sam Hablas sending one at the EMU goal.  But Leah Wenger was there to make the stop.

The game would not see another shot until the 31st minute, as the defenses and midfield controlled the action.  It was at that time that Quinn-Lynn Bates was called upon to step up.  She made two saves within minutes of each other to preserve the zeros.  Wenger stopped Garrett shortly after, making sure the game would stay knotted entering the half.

The second stanza saw a much shorter feeling out period, as Bates stopped a shot just over three minutes in.  EMU sent two more attempts towards the target, but they missed the woodwork completely.  Both teams continued to press in search of a tally, but each goalie was there to make important saves.  Hablas was stopped again by Wenger in the 72nd, but it would not be long until the deadlock would break.

Garrett got the ball on the right side of the field, and pushed her way through the defense.  She got near the box and fired her shot to the far post.  It beat Wenger, giving Randolph the 1-0 lead.

The Royals tried to answer over the final 18 minutes, as Bates was forced to save three shots.  But Bates and the rest of the defense kept Eastern Mennonite out, preserving the historic win.

There were only 20 total shots in the game, with the split being equal between the two teams.  However, Bates was there to stop all seven that she faced in the game.  Wenger stopped six of the seven she faced for the Royals (8-10-1 overall).

Randolph (6-10-1) will head to the ODAC Quarterfinals for the second-straight year on Wednesday.  The 'Cats travel up to Washington & Lee University (12-3-1) for an early game.  The contest will begin at 2:30 p.m., due to the fact the Generals do not have lights on their soccer field.
