LC Tops Bridgewater to Punch Ticket to ODAC Semifinals

LYNCHBURG, Va. --- The third seeded Hornets hosted the sixth seeded Eagles Wednesday evening on Shellenberger Field where Lynchburg won 2-0. With the victory, the Hornets will play the second seed Virginia Wesleyan this Saturday at the host site of Washington & Lee.

The Hornet offense was humming in the early minutes of the game but had no goals to show for the opportunities. A total of 30 shots were taken by the Hornets with 13 coming in the first half. Lynchburg found the game's first goal during the 32nd minute when sophomore Kennedy Jakubek beat her defender to feed freshman Alyssa Rudy to give the Hornets an early advantage. The Eagles only tallied two first half shots as Lynchburg took a commanding 1-0 lead into half.

Lynchburg came out of the half firing looking to extend their one goal lead over the Eagles as they continued to create opportunities with four more corner kicks in the second half and a total of nine on the night. The speedy senior midfielder Camile Bartley would beat the keeper on the right-side off a beautiful through ball from freshman midfielder Emily Sanchez to give the Hornets a 2-0 lead just 16 minutes into the second half. Bridgewater's goalkeeper Hayley Talbott had a nice game in net making 11 saves but the Lynchburg back line and senior goalkeeper Tess Felick were able to hold off the Eagles to secure a big ODAC tournament victory.

The Hornets will look to continue the 2016 campaign this Friday against Va. Wesleyan (11-4-3, 7-0-3 ODAC) as the Marlins defeated the seventh seed Randolph-Macon 3-0 Wednesday night. Earlier this season the two teams battled in Norfolk, Va. to a scoreless double overtime tie. The game time has yet to be announced so follow lynchurgsports.comfor the latest news.
