Marlins Defeat Lynchburg for Chance at ODAC Women's Soccer Title

LEXINGTON, Va. --- The Virginia Wesleyan College women's soccer team advances to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Championship after defeating Lynchburg College, 1-0, in Saturday's semifinal.

It is the Marlins first appearance in the championship game since 2011. The loss for Lynchburg snaps a string of six-straight conference championships.

Freshman Marli Hayward continues to add on to her rookie campaign with her seventh game-winning goal of the year. Hayward beat the defense and shot the ball low into the bottom of the net at the 27:39 mark. Moments later, Lynchburg's Kennedy Jakubek attempted a corner kick and the Marlins came up with the defensive stop.

Lynchburg only attempted five shots on goal, but their best chance to score was at the 41:35 mark. Alyssa Rudy dribbled around the Marlins defense and her shot hit the crossbar.

Virginia Wesleyan's Annie Hartman made a nifty move on a Hornet defender at the 56:00 mark and her shot was saved by Tess Frelick. The Marlins held a 3-2 corner advantage in this highly anticipated defensive matchup.

Frelick had two saves on the day for the Hornets. Taylor Chapman earned five saves in the net for Virginia Wesleyan.

The No. 2-seeded Marlins will take on No. 1 Washington and Lee on Sunday for the ODAC Championship.
