2012 ODAC Basketball Tournament News

February 26, 2012
For the second time in four seasons, Virginia Wesleyan emerged from a highly competitive ODAC tournament with the league title and the automatic berth in the NCAA event. Virginia Wesleyan turned back Randolph College 65-61 for the ODAC title Sunday at the Civic Center. The Marlins will play in the national postseason for the eighth straight season.

Third-seeded Guilford held #1 Virginia Wesleyan to just 18-percent shooting as the Quakers topped the Marlins, 57-40, to win the 2012 ODAC Women's Basketball Tournament. The title is the 3rd for the GC women's hoops program and its first since the 2002 season. GC heads to the NCAA D-III Tournament.

Virginia Wesleyan battled back from as much as a 10-point deficit late in the second half in defeating Hampden-Sydney , 67-65, in the semifinals finals of the 2012 ODAC Men’s Basketball Tournament. The Marlins move on to face Randolph in the conference title game at 3:30 p.m. It is VWC’s seventh overall championship game appearance and sixth in the last nine seasons.

Randolph got big three-pointers from Julius Thomas and Zach Desgain (pictured) down the stretch and a 20-point 16-rebound effort from Derrick Woods-Morrow in knocking off Randolph-Macon, 58-51, for a spot in its second straight ODAC title game. The WildCats will meet Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.

A layup by Washington and Lee's Katy Wilson was blocked as time expired and top-seeded Virginia Wesleyan held on for a 60-58 win over fifth-seeded W&L in the semifinals of the ODAC women's basketball tournament on Saturday afternoon at the Salem Civic Center.

Juniors Chris Astorga and Chris Teasley combined for 38 points on 13-of-23 shots from the field Friday to power Virginia Wesleyan College's No. 1 seeded Marlins to an 87-63 victory over Washingtonn & Lee University's Generals in the quarterfinal round of the 2012 ODAC championship tournament at the Civic Center.

Hampden-Sydney coupled some hot shooting offense with a defensive effort that held Lynchburg to 28-percent shooting as the Tigers defeated the Hornets, 82-60, in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Men's Basketball Tournament. H-SC moves on to face Virginia Wesleyan in the semifinals on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.

Eastern Mennonite made a pair of game-tying three pointers in the final 10 seconds of regulation, but it wasn't enough as Randolph-Macon topped the Royals, 99-91, in overtime of the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament Friday evening in Salem, Va.

Colton Hunt dropped in a tournament-high 29 points on Friday evening to help Randolph defeat Guilford, 75-53, in the final quarterfinal of the ODAC Men's Basketball Tournament. The WildCats move on to face Randolph-Macon College in the semifinals on Saturday at 8:00 p.m.

Top seeded Virginia Wesleyan held #8 Lynchburg to 30-percent shooting as the Marlins moved on to the semifinals with a 78-61 win over the Hornets in the first quarterfinal of the ODAC Women's Basketball Tournament. VWC moves on to face #5 Washington and Lee in the semifinals on Saturday.

Eastern Mennonite took over midway through the first half of the ODAC Quarterfinal game Thursday and came away with a 63-55 win over Roanoke. The Royals advance to the Semifinals and will play Saturday against either #3 Guilford or #6 Bridgewater at 3:00pm.

The Marlins’ Dave Macedo was tabbed the coach of the year, while Guilford's Will Freeman received top rookie accolades. Randolph's Colton Hunt was selected as the scholar-athlete for the second-straight season.

VWC took home two major awards as Stephany Dunmyer was named Coach of the Year and Sarah Seipp earned Rookie of the Year accolades. W&L's Becca Bolton was selected as the Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Virginia Wesleyan finished its ODAC regular season with a pair of victories on the final weekend to lock up the top seed in the 2012 ODAC Men's Basketball Tournament. Randolph-Macon will play as the second seed as the Yellow Jackets look to repeat as conference champions. Guilford, Hampden-Sydney and Lynchburg round out the top five seeds heading to Salem.

The final day of the regular season provided plenty of movement within the standings that resulted in three different ties within the ranks. Virginia Wesleyan and Eastern Mennonite finished deadlocked at 17-3 following Saturday's contest. The Marlins enter the tourney as the top seed thanks to its 2-0 record head-to-head with the Royals during the regular season.
