Marlins’ Macedo, GC’s Freeman, Randolph’s Hunt Honored
FOREST, Va. --- Virginia Wesleyan College
sophomore guard D.J. Woodmore garnered the Kurt Axe ODAC Player of
the Year honor, as announced on Thursday at the annual ODAC
Men’s Basketball Banquet. Marlins’ head coach
Dave Macedo was tabbed the Bob Johnson Coach of the Year, while
Guilford College forward Will Freeman received ODAC Rookie of the
Year accolades. Randolph College junior guard Colton Hunt was
selected as the 2012 ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of
the Year for the second-straight season.
Woodmore, the 2011 ODAC Rookie of the Year, is currently leading
his squad in scoring with 17.0 points per game, which is the third
best output in the league. The Virginia Beach native is also
third in the conference in total points (426) and second in the
ODAC with an 84.7 (83-of-98) free throw percentage. Woodmore
has scored double-digit points in 20 games this season, including a
career-high 35-point outburst against Lynchburg in January that
marks the second-highest total in the conference this season.
Macedo, in his 12th season at VWC, earns his second ODAC top
coaching honor. He has led the Marlins to a 22-3 overall
record and a 14-2 ODAC mark heading into the tournament as the top
seed this weekend. Macedo has guided Virginia Wesleyan to a
262-84 overall record and seven-straight NCAA tournament
appearances, which includes the Division III Men’s Basketball
National Championship in 2006.
Hailing from Fort Wayne, Ind., Freeman has added a spark off of the
bench for the Quakers. He is pouring in 9.6 points per game
and is grabbing 4.3 rebounds per contest. Freeman has also scored
more than 10 points in 12 games this season and his 51.3 field goal
percentage (98-of-191) is good enough for ninth in the ODAC.
He notched a career-high 19 points in an early season
non-conference win over Greensboro College.
Hunt, a native of Buford, Ga., is also a two-time All-ODAC First
Team honoree. He sports a 3.93 grade point average as an
economics major and is a 2011-12 Capital One Academic All-America
Third Team honoree, as voted on by the College Sports Information
Directors of America (CoSIDA). On the court, Hunt records
16.6 points per game, good enough for fourth in the league.
He has also already nailed over 50 three-pointers (fourth in the
ODAC) and is shooting a conference-best 86.4 percent from the
charity stripe. Hunt also ranks second in the league with 70
steals.
