Lynchburg, Va. --- Athletic Director Jon Waters announced on Friday that former Lynchburg College tennis standout and Hall of Fame member Kevin Record has been named the head men's and women's coach of the Hornets.
"It's an honor and a dream come true to be able to return home," said Record, who recorded 70 singles wins and helped the Hornets rank among the top 10 teams in the country during his playing career. "Lynchburg College provided me with a tremendous foundation for success in life.
"It's long been my dream to give back what was given to me here. With the energy, enthusiasm and support of Jon Waters, it's an extremely exciting time to be part of the Hornet family again."
"Kevin's passion for LC is infectious, He represents our incredible alumni in such a unique and powerful way that connected immediately with members of our search committee," said Waters. "His proven success leading on the tennis courts, coupled with a life-changing LC experience during his time here as a student will provide daily inspiration for our tennis programs as they continue to build on the foundation that has been rebuilt over the past couple of seasons."
Record made the finals of the ODAC tournament at the No. 2 singles position three times and, along with Conrad Frey, was among the first two LC players ever selected to play in the NCAA Tournament.
Record brings an impressive list of coaching credentials to the job. Since 2003, he has served as the head boys and girls tennis coach at Leon High School in Tallahassee, Florida, building the program into a state power.
His Leon girls won back-to-back state championships in 2010 and 2011, becoming the first team in north Florida to accomplish such a feat. Twice, Record has been named the state's coach of the year and during all 14 of his seasons he has been named the Tallahassee Democrat's Big Bend Coach of the Year.
His Leon boys finished runner up in the state in 2015 and 2016, the highest finishes in school history, and the boys have won 14 consecutive district titles.
Record is a United State Professional Tennis Registry certified instructor and was ranked No. 4 in the state of Florida and No. 31 in the country in his age division in 2010.
Also an accomplished journalist, Record was sports editor of The Critograph while a student at LC and got his first job after college at the Lynchburg News & Advance.
He later worked 10 years for the Charlottesville (Va.) Daily Progress and then spent four years working for the New York Times, covering Florida State University football.
Both of Record's sons were accomplished tennis players under his tutelage at Leon High. His oldest son, Kyle, who graduated with a master's degree in economics from Virginia, led Leon to a state berth in his final season of 2007.
Josh, meanwhile, is the winningest player in the history of Leon boys tennis. Most recently, he served as captain of the College of Charleston men's team this past spring, his senior season, helping the Cougars win the Colonial Athletic Association championship and advance to the NCAA Tournament.
