ODAC Athletes of the Week | Baseball, Lacrosse, Softball, Tennis

FOREST, Va. --- Spring sports continued their early season campaigns in week 26 as they continue through largely non-conference action before getting to ODAC play later this spring. Those earning ODAC Athlete of the Week awards for Monday, February 28, include (pictured from left and top): Grayson Thurman from Lynchburg baseball, Taylor Garcia from Washington and Lee women's tennis, Sydne Sawyer from Guilford women's lacrosse, Dylan Wolfe from LYN men's lacrosse, Alli Clemens from GC softball, Avery Neaves from LYN baseball, Gracie Ellis from Randolph-Macon softball, and Felix Bevc from Virginia Wesleyan men's tennis.

Below are entries for each of the winners from today's release. As winter sports continue, spring sports will soon begin competition. Once those seasons begin, the following schedule will be used for awards reporting:

  • Mondays: baseball, softball, m/w lacrosse, and m/w tennis
  • Tuesdays: outdoor track & field
  • Wednesdays: m/w golf

BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Grayson Thurman | Lynchburg | Sr. | Closer
Thurman, a senior from Lynch Station, Va., was a strikeout machine in three scoreless relief appearances that resulted in two saves and three Lynchburg wins. Thurman threw the final two frames of the a 7-1 victory over Averett. He gave up one hit and fanned six batters to account for all outs during his time on the hill. Thurman then saved both ends of a doubleheader sweep of Dickinson College. He registered seven strikeouts in the eight outs he recorded in 2.2 innings to close out game one by allowing just one hit in a 4-3 Hornets victory. In game two, Thurman fanned three more batters over a perfect pair of innings to close out an 8-7 victory for a second one-run save in a matter of hours. His 16 strikeouts over 6.2 innings of work translates to 21.60 strikeouts per nine innings. For the season, Thurman has racked up three saves and fanned 21 batters (2nd in the ODAC) over 9.2 frames for a league-best 19.55 K's/9 ratio.

BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Avery Neaves | Lynchburg | Jr |. Outfielder
Neaves, a junior from Reston, Va., was perpetually on-base for the Hornets as he reached safely 12 times over the course of four games on the way to a .625/.706/1.125 slash line. Neaves, who set an ODAC single-season record with 69 RBI last year, reached base five times in a 7-1 win over Averett to begin the week. He singled, walked twice, and was hit by two pitches on the wa to scoring two runs, driving in one, and registering a pair of stolen bases. In a three-game sweep of Dickinson, Neaves went 4-for-7 with six RBI, three walks, and a stolen base. In game two, he doubled and homered as part of a back-to-back effort with Gavin Collins. He drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly on the way to an 8-7 win. For the season, Neaves is hitting .500 (11-for-22) with a .594 OBP and .818 SLG. He has collected two doubles, a triple, a homer, and nine RBI.

MEN'S LACROSSE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Dylan Wolfe | Lynchburg | Jr. | Attackman
Wolfe, a junior from Pasadena, Md., played a big part in the Hornets top-10 nationally ranked showdown last week. Wolfe registered personal-best six points as sixth-ranked Lynchburg took down #8 Cabrini University, 15-9. He scored a career-high four goals to go with a pair of assists. One of his goals came with a man-up. He also collected a pair of ground balls. Six of his seven shots were on-net, leading to a .857 shots-on-goal percentage. For the season, Wolfe has notched seven points on five goals and two assists. Lynchburg boasts a six-game home winning streak against ranked opponents.

MEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Felix Bevc | Virginia Wesleyan | So. | #1 Singles | #1 Doubles
Bevc, a sophomore from Frankfurt am Main, Germany, helped Virginia Wesleyan to a 1-1 week with three wins including a pair at top-flight singles. In a 7-2 team win over Goucher, Bevc, last year's ODAC Rookie of the Year, posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over Brian Kane. He then joined Mitchell Perry for an 8-6 victory over Kane and Omosesan Adebamgbe at #1 doubles. In a 7-2 team loss to likely nationally-ranked Salisbury University, Bevc earned a 6-2, 7-6 victory over Brad Papalardo at #1 singles. He and Mitchel came up just short for another point with an 8-7 loss to Pappalardo and Gianluca Beaujon at #1 doubles.

SOFTBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Gracie Ellis | Randolph-Macon | Fr. | Pitcher
Ellis, a freshman from New Kent, Va., picks up her second straight weekly award after picking up two wins in two starts last week. Ellis tossed a five-inning no-hitter against Marymount (Va.) to win 13-0 at the Triangle Classic. She fanned 12 batters amongst the 15 outs recorded. She walked two batters as the only blemishes on her scorecard. Then, in a late schedule addition, Ellis came back that day and fired all seven frames to earn a 6-5 victory over Denison. She game up five runs (four earned) while scattering 11 hits. She walked just one and struck out nine batters. For the season, Ellis leads the ODAC with three victories and 31 strikeouts in 17.0 innings of work. She owns a 1.65 ERA with a .197 batting average against.

SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Alli Clemens | Guilford | So. | Catcher
Clemens, a sophomore from Cocoa, Fla., was perfect at the dish to help Guilford to a sweep of Salem College via 12-1 and 4-3 results. Clemens was 4-for-4 in game one as she doubled and crushed a two-run homer as part of a three-RBI showing. In game two, she singled in her lone official at bat. She also walked and scored two runs to finish the two-game set -- Guilford's first two wins of the season -- with a 1.000/1.000/1.800 slash line. Through six games his year, the Quakers' backstop is hitting .636 (7-for-11) with three doubles, a homer, three RBI, and three walks. She owns a .714 OBP and 1.182 SLG.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sydne Sawyer | Guilford | Fy. | Attack
Sawyer, a first-year from Winston-Salem, N.C., helped the Quakers to a pair of wins with 16 total points, 16 draw controls, 5 ground balls, and two caused turnovers. In a 17-9 victory over William Peace, Sawyer registered 10 points on seven goals and three assists. She came away with nine draw controls with a ground ball and a caused turnover. She scored her seven goals on just 11 shots. In a 15-6 win over N.C. Wesleyan, Sawyer posted six points on four goals and two assists. She collected seven more draw controls with four ground balls and a caused turnover. In three games played, Sawyer leads the ODAC with 16 points and 11 goals scored and is second with five assists. Her 16 draw controls also lead the league.

WOMEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Taylor Garcia | Washington and Lee | Sr. | #1 Singles | #1 Doubles
Garcia, a senior from Mandeville, La., led Washington and Lee to a nationally-rated victory with a pair of points in an 8-1 victory over Johns Hopkins University. Garcia, ranked #18 in the Atlantic South Region rankings by the ITA, earned a 6-4, 6-2 win at #1 singles over regionally 13th-ranked Anjali Devireddy. Prior to that singles contest, Garcia joined teammate Izzy Koziol for an 8-4 win at #1 doubles over Devireddy and Emily Javedan. Devireddy and her previous partner from the fall, Evenlyn Chang, were slotted seventh in the region.
