ODAC Athletes of the Week | Field Hockey, Soccer, Swimming, Volleyball

FOREST, Va. --- Swimming enters the weekly reporting process following week six of ODAC competition. Athletes in the pool are already performing like their fellow fall-season Division III standouts. Those earning weekly honors for Monday, October 10, include (pictured, from left and top): Luke Mega and Mac Joly from Lynchburg men's and women's soccer, Grace Vernarelli from Roanoke field hockey, Brynn Martinson and Will Hughes from Washington and Lee women's and men's swimming, and Sarah Marlowe from Averett women's volleyball.

Below are entries for all four winners from today's multi-sport release. Most weeks this fall, the following schedule will be used for awards reporting:

  • Sundays: football (thru 11/13/22)
  • Mondays: field hockey, soccer, swimming, volleyball, wrestling (when it begins)
  • Tuesdays: cross country
  • Wednesday: golf

FIELD HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Grace Vernarelli | Roanoke | So. | Forward
Vernarelli, a sophomore from Baldwin, Md., helped Roanoke to a trio of ODAC victories in a busy week that also included a fourth contest at Christopher Newport University (L, 2-0) in a non-conference showdown. Vernarelli scored five goals and dished out one assist for 11 points against the Maroons' ODAC counterparts, their first three games against league foes to stand atop the conference table at 3-0 with nationally 17th-ranked Shenandoah University. Vernarelli opened with the game's first goal in a 2-1 win over Eastern Mennonite. She collected a ball in the center of the circle and swiped it past EMU's keeper into the right side of the cage 1:13 into the third quarter. Vernarelli then registered her first career hat trick and second multi-goal game in a 6-0 win over Ferrum. She tallied the first three goals of game, beating the keeper in the at the 1:23, 2:12, and 5:07 marks of the first period. Her second goal came after some great passing off a penalty-corner with the final touch from Hope Keller. Roanoke then went on the road for back-to-back contests on the eastern side of the Commonwealth and registered a 6-0 win at Virginia Wesleyan. That victory marked the Maroons ninth straight triumph, setting a new program record. Vernarelli assisted Saige Bullock on the second goal of the game at the 14:08 mark and then made it 4-0 Maroons 5:25 into the second quarter. For the season, Vernarelli is third in the ODAC in points (25) and goals scored (10). She has registered at least one point in 8-of-10 games played.

MEN'S SOCCER PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Luke Mega | Lynchburg | Sr. | Forward
Mega, a senior from Glen Allen, Va., picks up his second straight ODAC weekly award after scoring three times in nationally 19th-ranked Lynchburg's 1-0-1 week against conference foes. Mega opened the scoring in a 1-1 draw with ninth-ranked Washington and Lee. He ran on to a one-touch pass from Brennan Lagana down the left channel, collected the lead-pass with a pair of touches before slotting it past the Generals' keeper with a left foot at the near post. Mega then scored both goals in a 2-0 victory at Ferrum. His first came 8:08 into the contest. After eluding a defender outside the left-post extended, he smashed a right-footed bender from 25 yards out off the inside of the right post and into the net. He made it 2-0 Lynchburg in the 31st minute by following up a save off a strike by Kenny Robles and one-timing it past a sprawled Panthers keeper. For the season, Mega leads the ODAC in points (27) and goals scored (12). He is also first in shots taken (36).

MEN'S SWIMMER OF THE WEEK
Will Hughes | Washington and Lee | Jr.
Hughes, a junior from Fairfax, Va., helped Washington and Lee opened the season with a 182-131 win over Centre in a dual meet and then first place out of eight teams at the ODAC Relays. Versus Centre, Hughest won the 50-yard freestyle in 0:21.93, the third-fastest in the ODAC in the early going. He then joined teammates Matthew Fritz, Harrison Cerone, and Thomas Denton in winning the 200-yard medley relay at 1:35.29. Hughest, who anchored the previous relay, opened the Generals 200-yard freestyle relay victory at 1:27.27, kicking of a squad that included Jackson Flower, Dawson Kramer, and Dylan Reher. At the ODAC Relays, Hughes was a member of four first place events. He swam second on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team at 3:12.24, lead-off on the winning 500-yard freestyle relay a team at 4:12.76, anchor on the winning 200-yard medley relay team at 1:34.77, and lead-off on the winning 200-yard freestyle relay team in 1:25:34.

WOMEN'S SWIMMER OF THE WEEK
Brynn Martinson | Washington and Lee | Jr.
Martinson, a junior from Charlotte, N.C., was strong out of the gates as the 2022 All-American won twice individual and was a member of six relay wins in Washington and Lee's 193-120 dual victory over Centre and the Generals first place finish of 10 squads at the ODAC Relays. Martinson won both the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle swims against Centre, posting ODAC top times of 0:24.40 and 0:53.37. She swam the anchor leg of the 200-yard medley relay, winning with teammates Sara Gaston, Amelia Macholz, and Jillian Cantrell in 1:50.00. She led off the winning 200-yard freestyle relay team of Sophia Rollo, Myla Rice, and Schuler Ross, which posted a time of 1:40.27. At the ODAC relays, Martinson swam second on the winning 100-yard freestyle relay team in 0:45.96, lead-off on the winning 400-yard and 500-yard freestyle relay teams in 3:39.13 and 4:49.03, respectively, and anchor on the winning 200-yard medley relay team in 1:51.47.

WOMEN'S SOCCER PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Mac Joly | Lynchburg | Fy. | Forward
Joly, a first-year from Mechanicsville, Va., had a four-goal week in helping Lynchburg to a 2-1-0 showing with both victories against ODAC foes to keep the Hornets locked with Bridgewater College and Virginia Wesleyan University at 4-0 atop the league table. Lynchburg, which dropped a late 1-0 result to nationally top-ranked Christopher Newport University to start the week, earned road wins at Sweet Briar and Ferrum in the Hornets remaining two fixtures. Joly was on the mark three times for the Hornets first hat trick of the season in a 9-0 win over the Vixens. She scored the Hornets fourth, fifth and eighth goals. Joly was again on the scoresheet in a 5-0 win over the Panthers. She registered the game's final tally in the 62nd minute with a full volley off the right-post following a cross played by Ella Tampio-Iorns. For the season, Joly has registered 10 points on five goals scored, sixth-most in the league.

VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sarah Marlowe | Averett | Jr. | Outside Hitter
Marlowe, a junior from Danville, Va., helped Averett to a pair of ODAC victories to stay in the mix near the top of the ODAC standings. The Cougars defeated Washington and Lee, 3-2, and Guilford, 3-0, with the win over W&L snapping the Generals 31-match ODAC regular season winning streak. Marlowe registered 32 kills at 4.0 per set and a .287 attack percentage. She chipped in four digs and six total blocks on the way to 35.5 points earned at 4.4 per frame. Marlowe registered 18 a match-high 18 kills against the Generals with a .375 attack percentage. She added a dig and two total blocks to account for 19.5 points. Against Guilford, Marlowe notched 14 kills on 40 swings with three digs and four blocks on the way to 16.0 points. For the season, Marlowe is sixth in the ODAC in kills (203) and eighth in kills per set (3.08) and attacks (504). She is ninth in points (220.0) and 10th in points per set (3.3).
