MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY RUNNER OF THE WEEK
BRANDON SPALDING, BRIDGEWATER COLLEGE
Spalding, a senior from Stuarts Draft, Virginia, took top individual honors Saturday at the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins Cross Country Invitational. Spalding placed first overall with a time of 27:19.2, 30 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.  

Men's Cross Country Honor Roll
Tyler Brown, GC Placed 46th overall at the Blue Marlin Invitational with the Quakers' fastest individual time of 31.09.1.
Rich Apgar, LC Helped the Hornets to a second place showing at the Blue Marlin Invitational by finishing 10th overall in 28:23.7.
Nick Lauter, VWC Turned in a career-best time of 27:51.0 to place fourth individually and help the Marlins to their first team win the 10-year history of the Blue Marlin Invitational.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY RUNNER OF THE WEEK
JESSICA SHAW, WASHINGTON AND LEE UNIVERSITY
Shaw, a senior from Dallas, Texas, helped lead the Washington and Lee women's cross country team to a first-place finish at the Virginia Wesleyan Blue Marlin Invitational on Saturday by finishing first out of 88 runners.  Competing in her first career cross country event, Shaw crossed the finish line in 22:17.8, a full 20 seconds in front of the next closest competitor.  A senior, Shaw is competing in cross country for the first time this fall after earning All-America honors in track last spring.  She has also been a member of the W&L swimming team for three years.

Katie Lee, BC Led the Eagles at the Blue Marlin Invitational with a 28th place time of 26:01.2.
Grace Normann, GC Ran Guilford's fastest time at the Blue Marlin Invitational, crossing the line 46th in 27:22.3.
Jennie Pernisi, LC Helped the Hornets to second overall at the Blue Marlin Invitational with a 24:53.2, good for 13th overall.

FIELD HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK
ERIN FUNKHOUSER, LYNCHBURG COLLEGE
Funkhouser, a junior midfielder from Natural Bridge, Virginia, scored once and dished out an assist on the game-winning goal as LC won its 2008 season opener over Dickinson College, 2-1, on Sunday. Funkhouser opened the scoring just 4:06 into the game, as she took a pass from sophomore Caitlin Gibb.  With the game tied at one all early in the second half, Funkhouser carried the ball from coast-to-coast and laid if off for Allie Weir, who found the back of the goal for the eventual game-winner.  

Field Hockey Honor Roll
Kathleen Tamberrino, BC Anchored the defense that allowed just one goal in two games to win the Mapp Invitational; recorded one defensive save.
Allison Byler, EMU Scored a goal each in helping the Royals go 1-1 with a 2-0 win over Dickson against a loss to Gettysburg; her four points currently lead the team.

MEN'S SOCCER PLAYER OF THE WEEK
JOSH REED, LYNCHBURG COLLEGE
Reed, a junior from Newark, Delaware, tallied four goals and three assists this weekend to lead the Hornets to the Arby's/Hampden-Sydney Classic team title and to earn MVP honors. He had six points Saturday in a 9-1 win over Shenandoah, netting two goals and adding two assists, and posted two goals and an assist against Mountain State Sunday in a 5-0 win. 

Men's Soccer Honor Roll
Chris Thomas, BC Finished a two-game weekend for the Eagles with one goal and one assist.
Junior Kamandua, EMU Enjoyed a five-point weekend in wins over Frostburg State and LaRoche; he assisted on the only goal against FSU and scored twice in a 4-0 victory against LaRoche; was one of three Royals named to the Frostburg State All-Tournament Team.
Kereith Pinnock, GC In his first collegiate contest, scored the Quakers' lone goal of the Sonny Carter Invitational at Emory in a loss to Oglethorpe.
Will Robertson, H-SC Notched five points on his weekend in helping the Tigers to a 2-0 start to the campaign; scored twice in a 5-0 win over NAIA Mountain State, and tallied the opening assist in a 2-1 win over Shenandoah; named to the Arby's/Hampden-Sydney Classic all-tournament team.
Mike Urbanik, R-MC Netted his first career goal in R-MC's 2-1 loss to Catholic; named to the Randolph-Macon Select All-Tournament Team.
Adam Thompson, RC Registered a pair of shutouts in the Roanoke Invitational while making two total saves in wins over SUNY-Old Westbury and Rutgers-Newark.

WOMEN'S SOCCER PLAYER OF THE WEEK
BETSY KWIATKOWSKI, LYNCHBURG COLLEGE
Kwiatkowski, a sophomore forward from Mount Jackson, Virginia, led Lynchburg to its second-consecutive Haverford Kick-Off Tournament Title. She scored one goal in a 3-2 win over Montclair State on Saturday, and netted the game's only score on Sunday in the Hornets' 1-0 win in the title game. 

Women's Soccer Honor Roll
Amanda Sperr, GC Scored the winning goal in the Quakers' 3-1 victory over Spelman; the tally marked her 11th goal of her career.
Ashley Malinowski, R-MC Scored once and assisted on another goal in the Yellow Jackets' season-opening 4-0 victory over Averett.

VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
TRICIA DAVIS, BRIDGEWATER COLLEGE
Davis, a junior from New Kent, Virginia, led the Eagles to a 4-0 start to the 2008 season on the way to being named the Most Valuable Player of the Emory & Henry Invitational.  The setter racked up 137 total assists for a 10.5 per game average.  She also hit .400 on 10 kills against no errors to go with eight service aces and 43 total digs (3.3 per game).  In the final two matches of the tournament, Davis hit a combined .444 with 74 assists and 29 digs in 7 games. 

Volleyball Honor Roll
Rachel Fertitta, E&H Freshman helped the Wasps to a 3-1 opening weekend record at their own tournament; collected 59 kills (3.93/g) and 11 blocks (0.73/g) while hitting at a .418 clip.
Taylor Phillips, GC Named to the All-Tournament Team at Eastern Mennonite after leading the Quakers in assists in all four matches; dished out a career-high 24 assists in five games against Catholic; also had 10 digs vs. CUA.
Savannah Tinsley, LC Gathered 75 total digs (5.8/g) including three 20-dig efforts in a 2-2 showing for the Hornets at the EMU Tournament; also had six aces in a win over the Hornets.
Sam Block, R-MC Led the Jackets to a 1-1 weekend at Marymount with 28 assists over eight games; she also collected 10 digs between the two matches.
Caitlyn Long, Roanoke Was named the MVP of the Cougar Classic (Averett) after collecting 68 digs across 15 games (4.5/g) and four Maroon match victories; she also notched nine service aces, including five against Huntingdon, as RC opened the season at 4-0 for the first time since 1988.
