BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
JEFF TAYLOR, LYNCHBURG COLLEGE
Taylor, a junior from Lynchburg, Virginia, helped LC
to a 4-1 week, as the Hornets also went 3-1 in the ODAC over the
past seven days. Taylor hit .471, including a three-hit, two run
performance against Hampden-Sydney College and a two hit, three run
afternoon against Averett University. Taylor also stole three bases
in four attempts, upping his season total to 26 in 31 chances.
BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
BRETT HOROWITZ, VIRGINIA WESLEYAN COLLEGE
Horowitz, a senior from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania,
improved to 5-0 after two appearances on the mound in a 4-0 week
for the Marlins. He picked up the win in a 8-6 win over
Randolph-Macon, pitching through the final 5.1 innings and
scattering three hits. He also took the win in a 7-3 victory over
Guilford, allowing just two hits in the final 3.1 innings on the
mound. Horowitz has improved his ERA to 2.22 in 44.2 innings of
work. He leads the Marlins with 18 appearances and 38
strikeouts.

Brett Howell, BC | Howell was 6-for-10 in three games played for the Eagles this past week. In the 27-0 victory over E&H, Howell was 5-for-6 with two homers (one a grand slam), two doubles, four runs scored and eight RBIs. Howell tied a BC record for total bases in a game with 13. |
Casey Hartman, BC | Hartman pitched seven shutout innings in the conference win, 27-0, over E&H. Hartman allowed just two hits while striking out nine and walking just two. |
Chris Baker, EMU | Baker has continued to hit above .400 for the year as the junior outfielder went 6-for-12 on the week with two runs scored and two RBI. Baker shifted to the leadoff spot in the last game of the week against Hampden-Sydney and had a pair of hits in five trips to the plate, scoring twice while driving in two runs. Baker entered the season with a career .228 batting average, but is batting .433 on the season with two home runs and 12 RBI. |
Kyle Wooden, GC | Hit .476 with 10 hits, two doubles, a homer and five RBI in the Quakers' 1-4 week ... also scored four runs during the week... extended his hitting streak to six games... has hit safely in 11 of his last 13 games... went 3-4 with a double and two RBI in an Apr. 6 loss to LaGrange... had three hits and scored a run in the Quakers' comeback win at Roanoke Apr. 7... registered his 16th multiple-hit game with two hits and an RBI in an Apr. 9 loss at Lynchburg... hit his team-leading and career-high eighth homer of the season, a two-run shot, in the Quakers' game-two loss to Va. Wesleyan Apr. 11 for his club-high 14th game with at least two RBI. |
Michael Blocher, GC | Recorded the Quakers' lone win in a 1-4 week and did not allow a run in five innings over two relief appearances... held batters to a .211 average for the week... improved to 4-0 with 3.2 scoreless innings of relief in Guilford's 9-8, 11-inning win at Roanoke Apr. 7... fanned five, walked one and scattered four hits in the longest outing of his Guilford career... threw 1.1 perfect innings of relief in Guilford's 7-3 loss to Va. Wesleyan Apr. 11... shares the team lead with four wins. |
Matt Brown, H-SC | Brown helped the Tigers to a 2-2 week, including a sweep of ODAC foe Eastern Mennonite University. For the week, Brown went 7-for-14 at the plate with two home runs, one double and six RBI. In game two against Eastern Mennonite on Saturday, Brown went 3-for-4 with two home runs and five RBI, giving him a team-high three homers for the year and powering H-SC to a 12-9 win. The junior from Chester, VA hit a double and scored a run against ODAC leader Lynchburg College, went 2-for-4 with a run against Mary Washington, and finished the series with the Royals 4-for-7 with two runs and the six RBI. |
Herbie Williams, H-SC | Set a new single-season mark for triples at Hampden-Sydney with a three-run triple in game two against EMU. He now has seven on the season. Williams went 6-for-15 on the week with four runs scored, six RBI, a double, a double and three stolen bases. |
Jonathan Nichols, LC | The senior right hander had his best outing of the season on Saturday, as he tossed seven innings of shutout baseball against Roanoke in an 11-1 win of game two of the ODAC doubleheader. Nichols allowed only six hits and struck out four batters along the way. For the season, Nichols is now 5-1 with a 3.83 ERA and has won his last four starts. |

Phil Cadle, VWC | Cadle emerged as one of the leading hitters for the Marlins during a 4-0 week, hitting at a .388 clip, with consecutive hits in wins over Randolph-Macon, Apprentice School and a sweep of Guilford. He connected for a double in every game, increasing his season total to a team-leading and career-high 11. He also improved his steals total to a team-leading 17-of-19. Cadle is hitting at a .319 clip for the season and leads the team with 42 runs scored. |
MEN'S GOLFER OF THE WEEK
PETER LATIMER, GUILFORD COLLEGE
Latimer, a junior from Markinch Fife, Scotland, picks
up his second straight golf weekly honor. He won the 78-man
West Region Invitational in Round Rock, Texas, Apr. 6-7 with a
two-over-par 218 at the Terravista Golf Club. The win marked
his first of the season and third of his Guilford career.
Latimer shot 72-72-74 to beat Mitchell Fedorka (La Verne) and Davis
Dewald (Mary Hardin-Baylor) by one shot. He led after
Monday's 36 holes by two shots and made 10 birdies over 54
holes. The tournament featured eight teams ranked in the
current Golf World/Nike Golf Division III Top 25 Poll.

Zach Wehrman, R-MC | Wehrman was the top Division III/ODAC finisher at the Shipbuilders Tournament. Wehrman fired a 73-78-151 to place second individuall and help R-M to a second place team finish. |
MEN'S LACROSSE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
KYLE JETT, HAMPDEN-SYDNEY COLLEGE
Jett, a junior from Suffolk, Virginia, had one of his
best weeks of the season as he tallied eight goals and three
assists in two games. In the first game of the week against
Greensboro, Jett tied his career-high with five goals while adding
two assists. He scored at least one goal in each of the four
periods of play. In the most recent game against Virginia Wesleyan,
Jett again scored the first goal of the game, this time just 38
seconds after the opening face-off. Just six minutes later, his
assist led to a 3-0 Tiger lead. He found the net again late in the
second quarter putting his team up 8-3. Coming out of intermission,
the junior scored the first goal of the half 31 seconds into play.
With eight goals and three assists in two games, Jett has
established himself as the second leading scorer and top assist man
for the Tigers thus far this season.

Daniel Dowd, GC | Registered five points in Guilford's 0-2 week, including a career- and team-high four goals in the Quakers' Apr. 11 game at Christopher Newport... tallied an assist in Guilford's Apr. 8 setback to second-ranked Roanoke... picked up two ground balls in both games. |
Tyler Tolson, LC | Scored four times Saturday against second-ranked Roanoke College and broke the Lynchburg College career goal-scoring record. His second tally broke the 15-year school record for career goals, topping Mike Marchetti's '94 career record of 162. Tolson added two second-half scores and now stands at 165 for his career. |
Pat March, RC | Scored five goals and added five assists for 10 points in two ODAC contests last week. Finished with two goals and one assist in limited action at Guilford in a 20-3 win... had three goals and four assists in 19-12 win at #14 Lynchburg Saturday. |
Seth Fishman, W&L | Fishman helped lead the Generals to an 18-5 win over Randolph-Macon on Saturday by totaling seven goals, one assist and three ground balls. His seven goals are tied for the second-most all-time by a W&L player and the most since Matt Dugan tallied seven goals against Virginia Wesleyan in 1999. For the year, Fishman leads W&L in goals scored (36) and he is second on the team in scoring (37). |
WOMEN'S LACROSSE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
GINA VALLES, ROANOKE COLLEGE
Valles, a junior from South Windsor, Connecticut,
earns her third straight ODAC weekly honor of the season.
Valles tallied eight goals and five assists for 13 points in two
games last week. She also totaled seven draw controls, three
groundballs and four caused turnovers. She had five goals and
four assists against Bridgewater, which wrapped up at least a tie
for the top spot in the ODAC for Roanoke with one league game
remaining. Valles also scored three goals, including the
game-winner with 28-seconds remaining, to defeat Christopher
Newport, 10-9, in a come-from-behind victory. Valles
currently leads the ODAC with 75 points and 58 goals scored.
In the latest national rankings (April 7), Valles was ninth in the
nation in scoring.

Shelly Nogueira, GC | Scored a game-high five points in the Quakers' 17-16 double overtime loss to Lynchburg April 8... tallied three goals and a game-high two assists in the match... also picked up five ground balls and two draw controls... assisted on Summer Frazier's goal with 1:48 left in regulation that forced the extra period. |
Deanna Welsch, LC | Scored six goals last week and added four assists as the Hornets defeated a pair of ODAC opponents last week. She netted five goals Wednesday as LC outlasted Guilford College, 17-16, in double overtime, and added seven ground balls and four draw controls. In a 18-4 win over Sweet Briar, Welsch had four assists and one tally. |
Alex Flammia, R-MC | Flammia helped R-MC to a 1-1 ODAC week that included a 11-10 at Virginia Wesleyan where she made 11 stops, including a save on free-position shot with two seconds remaining in the game. |
Emmy Mathews, W&L | Mathews netted three goals and dished out one assist in a 22-5 ODAC triumph over Randolph-Macon on Saturday. On the season, Mathews leads the team in scoring with 35 points on 28 goals and seven assists. |
SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
KATIE BRUCE, LYNCHBURG COLLEGE
Bruce, a sophomore from Lanexa, Virginia, picks up
her second weekly honor of the season. Bruce belted three
homeruns and tallied 11 RBI in a 6-0 week for the Hornets. Bruce
hit .333 for the week with six runs and a slugging percentage of
.833 and an on-base percentage of .429. She also went 3-0 in the
circle with a 3.60 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 20.0 innings pitched.
Bruce tossed three complete games and recorded one shutout. In game
two against Randolph-Macon, Bruce had two hits, two runs, one
homerun and six RBI while also throwing six innings and fanning 10
Yellow Jackets. She also tossed a shutout against Emory University
on Saturday.
SOFTBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
BARBIE MILES, LYNCHBURG COLLEGE
Miles, a senior from Kinsale, Virginia, went 3-0 in
the circle for the Hornets. She posted a 0.35 ERA and threw two
complete games. In 20 inning pitched, she allowed just four runs
and one earned run along with 17 strikeouts. In six innings vs.
Randolph-Macon, she allowed just four hits, zero walks, and zero
earned runs while striking out eight hitters. Against 8th ranked
Christopher Newport, she allowed zero earned runs and fanned six
Captains in seven innings. Against Emory, Bruce allowed one
run on seven hits while going the distance against the formerly #20
Eagles.

Megan Viafora, EMU | Viafora led the Lady Royals with nine RBI in the week as EMU went 4-0 against non-conference competition. Viafora notched her first collegiate home run, a three-run shot against Briarcliffe College. Viafora batted .583 for the week with four extra base hits, three runs scored, and a stolen base. For the season, Viafora is batting .366 with a .585 slugging percentage, placing her second on the squad in both categories. |
Lisa Lee, EMU | Lee was 2-0 this past week, striking out 13 batters in 9 1/3 innings pitched while also doing damage with the stick, registering a .462 batting average with six runs scored. Lee also hit a pair of home runs in a 13-2 victory, including a walk-off grand slam home run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Lee finished with four runs scored and seven RBI in that game while registering her third win of the year. Lee then shut down Briarcliffe College over five innings, allowing only one run on two hits while striking out nine batters. For the season, Lee has a 3.50 earned run average in 36 innings pitched. Opponents are batting only .222 off of the freshman right hander, while Lee has sat down 42 batters on three strikes. |
Ami Hutcherson, GC | Helped Guilford to a 3-1 week by hitting .667 with 10 hits in 15 at-bats... also scored a team-high four runs and stole two bases... set the school record for stolen bases in a season (10) with a theft Apr. 11 vs. Va. Wesleyan... cleanly fielded all 14 chances at third base... had at least two hits in all four contests... matched her season high with three hits in a win over Randolph and loss to Va. Wesleyan... had two hits, a stolen base and scored twice in a six-inning win over Randolph... went 3-4 with an RBI in the nightcap with the Wildcats... went 5-7 with a double and a stolen base in Guilford's split with Va. Wesleyan... has hit safely in 15 of the last 17 games. |
Jessica Burcham, GC | Posted a 1-1 record and 0.00 ERA over two appearances in Guilford's 3-1 week... fanned 17 and walked four in 11 innings... held opposing batters to a .175 batting average for the week... threw a four scoreless innings with six strikeouts in an 8-1 win over Randolph Apr. 8... yielded one walk and two hits in the game... fanned 11 in a 3-2 loss to Va. Wesleyan Apr. 11... walked three and allowed three unearned runs in the complete-game loss... registered her team-best fifth double-digit strikeout game of the season. |
MEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
WILL MASON-DEESE, GUILFORD COLLEGE
Mason-Deese, a junior from Manassas, Virginia, won his
lone singles and doubles matches of the week in Guilford's loss to
visiting Randolph-Macon. He yielded just three points in the
two matches, winning at #1 singles 6-1, 6-0, and doing the same at
#1 doubles, 8-2.
WOMEN'S TENNIS PLAYER OF THE
WEEK
JESSICA HILL, BRIDGEWATER COLLEGE
Hill, a senior from Hanover, Virginia, was 3-0 on the
week to help lead the Eagles to a 2-0 record. Hill won matches at
No. 2 singles and No 2 doubles in a 7-2 ODAC victory over Hollins.
She also won her match at No. 2 doubles in a 5-2 victory over
Roanoke in ODAC action.

Hilary Routon, GC | Won twice in the Quakers' Apr. 10 loss to visiting Randolph-Macon... scored a straight-set win at fourth singles and pulled out a 9-7 win with teammate Mary Simpson at second doubles. |
MEN'S TRACK & FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
JAMES BELL, LYNCHBURG COLLEGE
Bell, a freshman from Huddleston, Virginia, provisionally
qualified for his second event in this spring's national meet on
Saturday, as the newcomer posted a height of 15 feet, five inches
in the pole vault. His height is the eighth best in the country
this season and ranks fourth in the Lynchburg outdoor record
books. He also qualified in the decathlon last weekend at the
Liberty College Invite.

Michael Allen, EMU | Allen came in second place in the men's triple jump and finished with another top-10 result in the men's 100 meter dash as the Royals competed at the Lynchburg Track Classic. Allen hit a mark of 13.57 meters, finishing just behind the eventual winner, Savion Ashford, who registered a jump of 13.58 meters. Allen had earlier placed 10th in the men's 100 meter dash with a time of 11.54. |
Peter Foxen, RC | Placed 5th overall in the men's javelin, 1st among all ODAC competitor with a throw of 153'10." He currently leads the ODAC in the event. |
Billy Billington, W&L | Billington finished first overall in the hammer throw with a school-record toss of 48.90 meters at the Lynchburg Track Classic on Saturday. Additionally, he finished third among Division III athletes in the discus with a mark of 39.47 meters. |
WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD OF THE
WEEK
JALEESA OSBORNE, ROANOKE COLLEGE
Osborne, a junior from Gloucester, Virginia, won the
long jump at the Lynchburg Invitational, her third victory in four
weekends. Her leap of 18'6" was a provisional qualification mark
for the NCAA Championships. She is currently ranked #3 in the
country in the event. She also ran the lead-off leg on the 4x100m
relay team that placed 2nd overall in 47.42, the third weekend in a
row the team posted a qualification time for the NCAA
Championships.

chelsea Lawhorn, EMU | Lawhorn captured the women's shot put title at the Lynchburg Track Classic by setting a new top mark on the year with a distance of 10.57 meters (34' 8 ¼") on Saturday, April 11. Lawhorn finished just ahead of teammate Brittany Burke who was second with a throw of 10.54 meters (34' 7"). Lawhorn also placed ninth in the women's discus with a mark of 30.12 meters (98' 10"). |
Krystle Landes, LC | Threw the javelin 105'3" to take fourth place in a 15-athlete field at the Lynchburg Track Classic Saturday. |
Stacy Doornbos, W&L | Doornbos recorded two second place finishes among Division III athletes at the Lynchburg Classic. She leaped 5.44 meters in the long jump and crossed the finish line in 26.41 in the 200 meters. She also ran the preliminaries of the 100 hurdles in a time of 15.21 (which qualified for the finals, but she did not participate). |
