Yerkes Garners National Award

Yerkes Garners National Award

Named USTFCCCA South/Southeast Region Athlete of the Year

NEW ORLEANS, La. --- Junior sprinter Robin Yerkes has added another trophy to her resume by becoming the 2009 USTFCCCA South/Southeast Region Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Year. This award came after winning the 400-meters to claim the school's first national champion since 2000 and the fourth-ever championship at Roanoke.

Yerkes earned her sixth All-American honor and is the second Individual in Roanoke history to be a National Champion. The first was Casey Smith who won the 10,000m in 2001 with a time of 35:05.63 at the Outdoor Championships.

She has had a great outdoor season thus far and looks to win the outdoor track athlete of the year, just as she has done the previous two seasons. The 4x100 team looks primed for another run at the National Championship as they have one of the best times in the country. Yerkes made her second national-qualifying mark of the meet in the 200-meters at the Bridgewater Jopson Invitational last weekend.  Her first-place finish with a time of 24.74 was a meet and facility record.

The men's and women's track & field teams will travel to Lynchburg, Va. to compete in the Liberty Invitational next weekend, April 4.
