Senior Basketball Player Elected to Post at Recent NCAA Convention
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. --- The National Collegiate
Athletic Association (NCAA) has announced that Washington and Lee
senior basketball player Isaiah Goodman (Richfield, Minn./Holy
Angels) has been named the chair of the 24-member NCAA Division III
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Goodman, who was selected for the position during the SAAC's
meetings at the recent NCAA Convention, joined the committee in
2007 as a representative of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
He succeeds Christine Lewis of Vassar in the post.
"This is a well-deserved honor for Isaiah, as he is an outstanding
young man and the ideal person for the job," said W&L Director
of Athletics Jan Hathorn. "I know he will represent the NCAA
SAAC with distinction, as well as the ODAC and W&L SAAC, by
extension. We couldn't be more proud and we wish him good
luck in his role."
The Division III SAAC plays a key role in the division's
governance, offering input on rules, regulations and policies that
impact student???athletes and providing insight into the
student???athlete experience. It has two voting members on the
Division III Management Council and also is represented on Division
III committees.
The SAAC's stated mission is to enhance the total student???athlete
experience by promoting opportunity for all student???athletes,
protecting student???athlete welfare, and fostering a positive
student???athlete image, while maintaining the tenets of the
Division III philosophy.
"Two years ago, W&L didn't have a SAAC and I didn't even know
what one was," said Goodman. "After helping start our campus SAAC,
it's awesome to think that I could be elected to such a position in
such a short amount of time. I am truly honored."
Goodman is the starting point guard and a team captain for the
Generals' men's basketball team, which is having one of its best
seasons in recent memory. W&L is 12-4 overall, 5-2 in the
ODAC, and has won 11 of its last 13 games. Goodman has
started all 16 contests to date and averages 8.6 points, 2.3
rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.6 steals per game. For his
career, he has played in 89 contests and has totaled 686 points,
150 assists and 115 steals.
Active in the campus community, Goodman initiated the Captains
Council, created to develop and improve the leadership skills of
captains of varsity teams, and has served as a member of Washington
and Lee Student Consulting, a student???managed organization that
provides consulting services for profit and nonprofit business and
community organizations.
He also serves as assistant head student dorm counselor and has
served as an officer in a campus investment club, and has been
selected for internships with two major corporations.
