Phillips a Double All-American, Nunley and Woodmore Earn Top Awards
FOREST, Va. --- Both the National
Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and D3hoops.com recently
released their All-Region and All-America teams, of which the ODAC
was well-represented. Eastern Mennonite wing Todd Phillips
earned an All-America nod from each outlet, heading a group of six
ODAC men's hoops players and coaches that were honored over the
past week.
The 2011 ODAC Player of the Year, Phillips turned an All-South
Region First Team honor from both sources into a NABC All-America
Third Team accolade and a D3hoops.com Honorable Mentnion
All-America award. He was named an All-American by
D3hoops.com in 2010 as well. Phillips was second in the ODAC
in scoring this season and top four in four other categories. He
finished with averages of 18.2 points and 5.7 rebounds per game, as
he increased his scoring average for the third straight time. He
registered 2.2 steals per game and finished with the most steals in
EMU history at 188.
Virginia Wesleyan's D.J. Woodmore added to his ODAC Rookie of the
Year and Second Team awards with two honors from D3hoops.com.
The Virginia Beach-native was named the All-South Region
Rookie of the Year, and later tabbed the National Rookie of the
Year. Woodmore, who helped lead the Marlins to the Round of
16 in the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament, finished
the year 10th in the ODAC in scoring at 13.8 points per game.
He ranked fourth in free throw percentage (81.3%) and fifth
in three-point shooting (41.1%).
Randolph head coach Clay Nunley also turned his ODAC top award into
a regional top honor. Nunley was tabbed by the NABC as the
All-South Region Coach of the Year. He helped lead his
WildCats to the program's first title game in the four-year history
of the program. Randolph set a new team record for wins in a
season with 18, defeated a pair of national top-25 ranked teams (by
D3hoops.com), and earned votes towards the D3hoops.com national
poll for the first time in program history.
Randolph-Macon forward Danny Jones earned a pair of regional
awards. The NABC tabbed the Yellow Jackets' senior to their
All-South Region First Team, while D3hoops.com awarded him third
team honors. Jones averaged 13.9 points per game (9th in
the ODAC) and led the league with a 60.4-percent mark from the
field. He will graduate as the 23rd leading
scorer in R-MC Men's Basketball history with 1,277 points
over his four-year stay in Ashland. Jones finished his career
by playing in the second annual NABC/Reese's All-Star Game prior to
the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship Game in Salem,
Va.
Harrison George represented Hampden-Sydney and the ODAC on the
D3hoops.com All-South Region Second Team. George, a 2011
All-ODAC First Team choice, led the conference in scoring
at 20.0 points per game. The Tigers' sophomore also snared 8.0
rebounds per game, which is second only to the 8.4 boards averaged
by Bridgewater's Rick Maloney. George also led the team and
was fourth in the conference in field goal percentage
(56.1%).
Randolph sophomore Colton Hunt turned his All-ODAC First Team nod
into a third team spot on the D3hoops.com All-South Region team.
Hunt, who also earned the ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance
Scholar-Athlete Award for men's basketball, finished seventh in the
league in scoring at 15.6 points per game. He was second in
steals (61) and eighth in three-point shooting (40.0%).
