Randolph-Macon Defeats Stevens in NCAA Men's Basketball First Round

Yellow Jackets to Meet WPI in Second Round on Saturday

Bronx, N.Y. --- The Randolph-Macon College Men's Basketball team took advantage of 84.6-percent shooting from the foul line, including 6-for-6 down the stretch, to capture a 69-60 victory over Stevens Institute of Technology in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament.

R-MC improves to 20-9 on the season, which marks the sixth consecutive 20 win season for the Yellow Jackets. Stevens ends its season 22-6.

Senior forward, Lamar Giggetts finished with a game-high 19 points to lead the Yellow Jacket's offense. Sophomore frontcourt members Marcus Badger and Connor Sullivan joined Giggetts in double-figures with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Joe Hassell and Andre Simon each chipped in with nine points in the win.

Matt Skrelja and Sheldon Jones led the Ducks with 18 points each, while Kenny Gan and Russ Thompson added 11 markers. Gan also pulled in a game-high eight rebounds.

Randolph-Macon started off strong, taking an early 11-6 lead at the 12:58 mark in the first half, after a Lamont Moore layup.

The Ducks rallied over the next three minutes and tied the game up at 13-13 with just under 10 minutes to play following a Jones trifecta.

R-MC then went on a 22-13 run throughout the remainder of the half to take a 36-25 advantage into the intermission.

The Yellow Jackets started the second half where they left off, scoring the first seven points to take a 16 point lead with 17:59 left on the clock.

The Ducks would answer with a 21-4 run over the course of the next seven minutes to tie the game at 46-46 at the 10:59 mark.  The next eight minutes featured three ties as both teams went basket-for-basket.

With the score 61-60 in favor of the Yellow Jackets, Badger hit a jumper with 54 seconds on the clock to extend the lead to three.  R-MC secured the win going 6-for-6 from the charity stripe down the stretch, including 4-for-4 from Badger.
