HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. --- Cabrini College took down #16 Hampden-Sydney, 80-78, on Saturday night in the NCAA Tournament First Round.

Cabrini got the ball back with 42 seconds left following a Leon Hargrove (Raleigh, NC / Middle Creek) layup. AJ Williams missed a jump shot with 26 seconds to go, but the Cavaliers maintained possession of the ball as the rebound went off the tip of the finger of a Tiger player. Aaron Walton-Moss then missed a layup with nine seconds left, but Cabrini got another offensive rebound and the Tigers were forced to foul. Williams made one of two with just over eight seconds to go to make it an 80-78 game. After the missed free throw, the Tigers grabbed the rebound and found Greg Lewis (Mechanicsville, VA / Hanover) wide open in the right corner for a three, but his shot rimmed in and out as Deleon Floyd secured the board for the win.

Hampden-Sydney got off to a strong start and led 12-8 at the 14:14 mark after a Fletcher Lumpkin (Richmond, VA / Mills Godwin) made three from the top of the arc. Walton-Moss scored the next five points of the contest to give Cabrini a 14-12 advantage. The Tigers came back to tie it at 19-19 after a Mike Murray (Norfolk, VA / Norfolk Christian) three pointer from the top of the three-point line. The Cavaliers then caught fire from three, making four trifectas along with a layup for a 14-0 run to lead 33-19 at 7:39.

Harrison George (Raleigh, NC / Leesville Road) ended the run with a three-pointer that sparked a streak from the Tigers to get back into the contest. Walton-Moss responded with a layup, but the Tigers scored the next seven points to cut the deficit down to 35-29. Following another Walton-Moss layup, Lewis and Sasha Obradovic (Belgrade, Serbia / Hawaii Prep) canned back-to-back shots from deep range to make it just a 37-35 game at 2:42. Jeremy Knowles drained a three pointer of his own, but George and Obradovic tallied the next four points as H-SC trailed just 40-39 at the 1:12 mark. Knowles provided the half's last bucket on a jumpshot at 45 seconds.

Hargrove and Lewis opened the second half with two straight scores to take a 43-42 lead just over two minutes in. Cabrini took a 47-43 lead less than a minute later, but a Cam Anderson (Charlottesville, VA / Blue Ridge) traditional three-point play put the Tigers back on top 49-47 at 14:45. The Cavaliers answered with an 8-0 run to surge ahead 55-49 and the game remained a multi-position lead for Cabrini for much of the rest of the game.

A Deleon Floyd layup and free throw at 1:54 gave the Cavaliers a 79-71 lead with only 1:54 remaining. George and Lewis scored the next five points, all off free throws, and a Hargrove layup cut the lead to 79-78 with 42 seconds left in the contest.

George posted a game-high 25 points. He made 8-of-14 field goal attempts, 2-of-5 three pointers, and 7-of-10 free throws. He also added six rebounds, five steals, and three assists. Lewis contributed 13 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. Hargrove tallied 12 points as he made 6-of-9 shots. Anderson came off the bench to tack on 11 points and two blocks.

Walton-Moss scored 16 points and added game-highs of 13 rebounds and six assists while making 7-of-14 baskets. Knowles scored a team-high 24 points as he converted six triples. Fran Rafferty contributed 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting.

Each team converted at a high rate on offense. Hampden-Sydney shot 50.9% overall, 38% from three, and was 14-of-21 at the free throw line. Cabrini made 49.2% of their shots, 40% from behind the arc, and was 6-of-10 at the charity stripe. Cabrini outrebounded Hampden-Sydney 36-27, including a 16-8 advantage on the offensive glass. The second chance points proved to be a big factor as the Cavaliers outscored the Tigers 20-13 on second chance opportunities.

The Tigers conclude their season with a 23-5 overall record with a 14-2 mark in ODAC play.
