Hornets Upset #1 Trinity in 3rd Round

Lynchburg to Face Ohio Wesleyan

DELAWARE, Ohio --- Junior midfielder Jordan Clark netted the game winner as the Lynchburg College men's soccer team upset top-ranked Trinity University (TX) 2-0 Saturday in the third round of the 2010 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament. LC will face the Ohio Wesleyan/Johns Hopkins winner Sunday at 6 p.m. for the right to advance to the final four in San Antonio, TX next weekend. It is the farthest the Hornets have ever advanced into the NCAA Tournament.

The Hornets had an early attempt to score in the first two minutes, but an LC shot on was saved by Tiger keeper Tim Nelin. Trinity had a good scoring opportunity midway through the first period, but a Cameron Hoggsett shot hit the post and LC cleared the ball to escape the scoring threat.  The Hornets had a scoring chance with about five minutes remaining before halftime.  Zach Ward was awarded a throw-in on the Trinity half and his heave found its way to Donald Hart III whose shot was stopped by Nelin. The Tigers had two other chances as the half drew to a close, but LC's defense held.

Lynchburg was awarded a penalty kick after intermission when Scott Colman was fouled inside the box. But Nelin came up big with a save on Ward's attempt at 28:25. Releford made an outstanding save with 22:40 remaining on a Tiger breakaway chance.

LC got on the scoreboard after over 77 minutes of scoreless soccer as Clark collected a loose ball at the top of the box and left footed it into the bottom left corner of the net. LC added an insurance goal minutes later at 80:45 as Hart scored on a cross from Shane Spanninger.

Trinity (19-3-1) outshot LC 17-9 and also had a 6-4 edge in corner kicks. Releford made nine saves while Nelin made five stops.
