H-SC's Turner, EMU's Yoder Secure Individual Honors
FOREST, Va. --- Roanoke College took home two major honors as part of the All-ODAC Men's Soccer Awards. Forward Marc Dinkel earned ODAC Player of the Year accolades, while Maroons' mentor Ryan Pflugrad received ODAC Coach of the Year laurels. Hampden-Sydney College forward Ryan Turner was named the ODAC Rookie of the Year, and Eastern Mennonite University goalkeeper Andrew Yoder was tabbed the ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Scholar-Athlete.
Dinkel, a junior from Basel, Switzerland, led the ODAC in points (37), goals scored (12) and assists (13) as he proved to be the engine behind the ODAC's top scoring offense (43 goals) thru the end of the conference tournament. Four times he notched the game-winning goal for RC, including a 1-0 victory over Randolph-Macon College and a 4-3 triumph at EMU. He started all 20 games for the Maroons, registering at least one point on 14 occasions. His largest output came in the ODAC semifinals against Washington and Lee University in which he scored once and dished out three assists for a five-point night. Thru two seasons in a RC uniform, Dinkel has scored 17 goals and handed out 19 assists for 53 points.
Pflugrad enjoys his first ODAC top coaching award after just his second year leading his alma mater. Roanoke posted a 15-3-2 record in all contests, but only had a tie blemish its conference mark on the way to a 10-0-1 campaign and the top seed in the ODAC Tournament. RC made its second appearance in the ODAC championship game in three seasons, falling to Lynchburg College, 1-0. In two seasons, Pflugrad owns records of 24-10-4 (.684) overall and 15-4-3 (.750) against conference competition.
Turner, a freshman from Raleigh, N.C., led Hampden-Sydney with 18 points, tying for the team lead with seven goals scored. He added four assists to rank as the top-scoring first year player in the conference. His seven goals tied for third and 18 points tied for fourth in the ODAC. His highest scoring contest came in early October at Emory & Henry in which he scored both goals in a 2-0 win. Turner recorded his first collegiate goal in the Tigers' 4-0 victory over Penn State-Abington.
Yoder, a senior from Harrisonburg, Va., stands out on and off the field. In the classroom, Yoder maintains a 3.95 grade point average as an Accounting and Economics double major with a minor in Finance. A three-time All-ODAC Academic Team honoree, Yoder earned VaSID Academic All-State in 2013 and 2014. He's a six-time member of the Eastern Mennonite University Dean's List, also serving as an academic support center tutor for the past three years. On the pitch, Yoder ranked third in the ODAC with a .795 save percentage. He allowed just 17 goals towards a 1.37 goals-against-average, which rank fifth and seventh in the conference, respectively. He made 66 total saves, including a season-high seven twice against Johns Hopkins University and Guilford College.
