Bass Breaks W&L Assists Record in NCAA First Round Win

LEXINGTON, Va. --- Senior midfielder Samuel Bass (Charlotte, N.C. / Myers Park) led the charge with a goal and a pair of assists to become the Washington and Lee men's soccer all-time program assists leader in the team's 5-1 win over Brevard in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday.

Bass logged his assists on W&L's (15-2-4) first two goals of the game to pass teammate and classmate Michael Kutsanzira (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe / Putnam Science Academy (Conn.)), as well as Dylan Ritch '19, to claim the top spot with 25 career helpers. Bass and sophomore Weyimi Agbeyegbe (Atlanta, Ga. / Westminster) assisted Kutsanzira on the game's first score, just 90 seconds into the contest, before Bass and junior Grant McCarty (Dallas, Texas / Parish Episcopal) played a give-and-go with each other up the field, resulting in a McCarty score in the 13th minute.

W&L came out of halftime with a 2-0 lead, but quickly saw its lead reduced to one goal just 52 seconds into the second half, when Will Finney assisted Brevard's (12-6-3) leading scorer, Ryan Lynch, on a goal.

The Generals then reawakened with two goals just 1:46 apart in the 61st and 62nd minutes. Agbeyegbe scored the 61st-minute goal, from junior Park Bruner (Atlanta, Ga. / Atlanta International), before Bass headed home a throw-in taken by senior Charley Colby (Prairie Village, Kan. / Shawnee Mission East). Colby then put the finishing touches on the scoreboard with a score in the 81st minute, when he headed in a free kick taken by sophomore Lucas Pleasants (Raleigh, N.C. / Cardinal Gibbons).

Bass's four-point game pushed him over the 80-point mark for his career, as his 81 points now rank sixth in program history. His goal in the 62nd minute was the 28th of his career, which ties him with Jack Palmer '08, Andrew Grimes '02 and Reid Murphy '93 for ninth place in program history. Bass also joins Tim Henry '66 and Ritch as the only players in program annals to currently rank Top 10 in career goals, assists and points.

Kutsanzira moved up to eighth place in points in program history (68) with his goal, while Agbeyegbe extended his goal-scoring streak to a fourth-straight game. McCarty's score was his fifth of the season and Colby's tally was his fourth, all of which have come over the last six games. Bass took a game-high eight shots on the day, and first-year Will Joseph (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier) (15-0-4) made one save across the 90 minutes of action.

Lynch took a Brevard-high two shots in the game, with his goal counting as his 15th of the season. Finney assisted on Lynch's goal and four other Tornado players took one shot each to total the team's six attempts. Matheus Rossi played the first 61:48 in goal, allowed four goals and made five saves, while Paul Bienefeld covered the final 28:12, made two saves and surrendered one score.

W&L held a 10-4 shot advantage at halftime but finished the game at a 28-6 total after outshooting Brevard, 18-2, over the final 45 minutes. The Blue and White also earned five corner kicks and conceded one.

The Generals advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and will battle Muhlenberg on Sunday on Watt Field at 3:00 pm.
