GAMBIER, Ohio --- The 22nd-ranked Washington and Lee men's soccer team was defeated by third-ranked Kenyon on the road on Saturday in the NCAA Division III Tournament Round of 16 by a 3-1 score.
 
All four goals were scored in the second half, with the first three coming across a 10-minute span early in the period. The Owls (19-1-1) struck first in the 47th minute when Sebastian Gaese found Gerardo Martinez for a score, followed by another Kenyon goal less than four minutes later from Sam Carson.
 
In the 57th minute, the Generals (16-3-4) pulled the game back to one score when junior Grant McCarty (Dallas, Texas / Parish Episcopal) got a pass off from inside the box towards sophomore Weyimi Agbeyegbe (Atlanta, Ga. / Westminster) on the left side. Agbeyegbe finished the opportunity for his 16th goal of the season, extending his goal-scoring streak to six straight games.
 
After the W&L goal, the Generals kept the pressure on by taking six of the next seven attempts in the contest, all of which came in succession from the 64th to 74th minutes. However, in the 77th minute, Kenyon found itself on a counter attack and got its lead back to two goals thanks a score from Isaac Cortez.
 
The Owls' defense clamped down after that, allowing just one shot attempt from the Generals, a shot from McCarty in the 78th minute that went wide.
 
Agbeyegbe finished the day with a game-high six shots. He will go into his junior season with his six-game goal streak intact, tied for the second-longest streak in program history. He also finishes his sophomore campaign with the fifth-most goals in a season in program history.
 
Seniors Michael Kutsanzira (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe / Putnam Science Academy (Conn.)) and Samuel Bass (Charlotte, N.C. / Myers Park) combined for six shots in the game, with Kutsanzira claiming five attempts. The two end the season ranked sixth (82) and ninth (69), respectively, in the program's history for points. First-year Will Joseph (Wilmette, Ill. / New Trier) (16-1-4) made one save in the game, a diving stop in the first half, while taking just his first career loss in 21 appearances.
 
Carson's goal came on a Kenyon-high tying three shots, tied with Scott Upton, while Gaese finished with two assists after adding a helper on Carson's goal in the 51st minute. In goal, Jack Pedreschi made three saves across the 90 minutes of action.
 
W&L finished the game with the advantage in shots at 17-10, helped by a 10-4 margin in the second half. Kenyon edged the Blue and White in corner kicks, 4-3.
 
With the completion of the 2022 season, the Generals saw multiple Top 5 updates in the program record book. They finished the year with 68 goals, second only to last year's team (70), tied for the fourth-most wins in a season (16) and the fifth-highest winning percentage (.783). Of the five seasons in program history in which the team has finished with 16 or more wins, three have come during the last three traditional fall seasons.
