Strong Doubles Play Keys Victory
ATLANTA, Ga. --- Hampden-Sydney
continues their strong postseason play as they defeated the
Pioneers of Transylvania University 5-1 in the first round of the
NCAA Tournament. The Tigers came out strong in doubles play winning
two of the three matches courtesy of William Moss (Fredericksburg,
VA/Fredericksburg) and Rich Pugh (Augusta, GA/Lakeside), and Philip
Parrish (Richmond, VA/Douglas Freeman) and Tal Covington
(Gainesville, VA/Flint Hill).
Parrish also earned one of the Tigers' three singles wins in the
No. 6 spot. The freshman did so in dominating fashion defeating
Trevor Scott 6-0; 6-0. Moss also got a quality singles win
defeating No. 1 Will Palmer 6-4; 6-1. The final victory came
from Kevin Calhoun (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin), who played in the
No. 4 slot and got a 6-2; 6-2 victory.
Since the event was played to decision, the No. 2, No. 3, and No. 5
singles were suspended when Hampden-Sydney clinched the match.
With the win the Tigers improve to 14-5 on the year and get to play
at least one more round.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, May 9 as they will face
the host-team Emory University in Atlanta, GA for the second round
play of the NCAA Tournament. The first match is set to start at
11:00 am.
