Bates Top Coach, White Named Best Rookie

SALEM, Va. --- Hampden-Sydney College senior Will Moss became the second ODAC men’s tennis student-athlete to win four ODAC Player of the Year awards in a vote of the league’s men’s tennis coaches.  Moss picked up a second honor as he was voted the ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete by the ODAC sports information directors.

Moss is joined by head coach Murrie Bates, who wins the conference’s top coaching honor.  Washington and Lee University freshman Hayden White was tabbed the ODAC Rookie of the Year.  Randolph College was awarded the sport’s team sportsmanship award.

A senior from Fredericksburg, Va., Moss is currently the 11^th ranked player in the Atlantic South Region rankings by the ITA.  He went 9-4 during the regular season at #1 singles, including a perfect 7-0 in conference play.  In doubles action, he and partner Rich Pugh went 11-4 from the #1 position, including a 6-1 showing in the ODAC.  The duo is ranked 10^th in the region.

In the classroom, Moss boasts a 3.657 grade point average while majoring in history with minors in military leadership and national security studies.  He is a member of several honor societies including Omicron Delta Kappa (national leadership honorary), Phi Alpha Theta (history), Phi Sigma Iota (foreign language) and Phi Beta Kappa (national academic).  He is chairman of the Hampden-Sydney Honor Court, member of the NCAA Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), and a Hampden-Sydney Senior Campaign Captain.

This is the second top coaching award in the ODAC for Hampden-Sydney’s Bates.  He earned the honor in 2008 prior to being named the VaSID Coach of the Year in 2009 after leading the Tigers to the ODAC title.  He again led H-SC back to the conference title match in 2010, only to fall to Washington and Lee in a reversal of results from a season prior.

White, a freshman from Baltimore, Md., hit the courts running upon his arrival in Lexington.  He placed fourth in the 2009 Fall ITA Small College National Championships, earning him a nationally-fifth ranking coming into the spring campaign.  He went 10-4 during the regular season, including a 4-1 mark in ODAC play, all at #1 singles.  He and doubles partner Jeremy Becht went a combined 12-3 (5-0 ODAC) between #1 and #2 doubles.  White’s play helped lead the Generals to the 2010 ODAC tournament crown, the program’s 29^th overall.
