Generals' White is Men's Tennis Player of the Year for Second Time

W&L's Detwiler, VWC's Wilson also Honored

FOREST, Va. --- Washington and Lee University standout Hayden White picked up a pair of honors for the second straight year as part of the 2013 ODAC Men's Tennis awards.  White was named both the ODAC Player of the Year and the ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second straight season.  Generals' mentor David Detwiler was tabbed the ODAC Coach of the Year, while Virginia Wesleyan College newcomer Graham Wilson earned the ODAC Rookie of the Year accolade.

White, a senior from Baltimore, Md., excels in the classroom and on the court.  An accounting major, White maintains a 3.583 grade point average as a W&L Scholar.  He has also been a three-time member of the All-ODAC Academic Team and is slated for a fourth honor following this season.

On the court, White is currently the top-rated player in the Atlantic South Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). He was also rated 12th in the country entering the spring schedule of matches.  The Generals' #1 singles player has lost just twice this spring, posting a 14-2 record that includes a 7-0 mark in league matches.  He posted five victories against regionally ranked opponents, including against those ranked 2-4 in Robert Kjellberg from N.C. Wesleyan, Eric Halpern from Emory, and Christian Heaney-Secord from Carnegie Mellon.  White has also topped ninth-ranked Tyler Carey from Mary Washington and 12th-ranked Ross Silverberg from Franklin & Marshall.  In doubles play, White is 16-4, playing most often with sophomore Christopher Hu.  The duo is 14-4 overall, 13-3 from the second flight and 6-0 in conference matches, earning them an All-ODAC First Team spot.

Detwiler, in his 13th season running the Generals' men's tennis program, enjoys his fourth ODAC Coach of the Year award after leading Washington and Lee to its 32nd overall and fourth straight conference title.  W&L has captured the league hardware in all but one year during Detwiler's tenure (2009).  The Generals are currently ranked 23rd in the country and fourth in the Atlantic South by the ITA.

Wilson, a freshman from Newport News, Va., put together a 17-4 overall record from the #1 singles position this spring, which also includes an 8-2 mark in conference action.  He won twice against regionally ranked opponents, both from the Central Region in 19th-ranked Ankur Bhargava from the University of Chicago and 22nd-ranked Brendon O'Connell from St. Thomas (Minn.).  In doubles play, Wilson and classmate Drew Tomajczyk posted a 17-6 record, all from the top flight.  They also went 10-1 against league foes, earning an All-ODAC First Team honor.
