FOREST, Va. --- Washington and Lee University has won 10 straight ODAC men's tennis titles, and the conference's coaches see the Generals hoisting yet another trophy by season's end as W&L tops the annual ODAC Men's Tennis Preseason Poll. W&L collected 11 first place votes on the way to 121 points for a second straight season. Virginia Wesleyan moves up to the #2 position with 104 tallies. Just one marker separates Guilford College (98) from Hampden-Sydney College (97), with the Quakers picking up the final first place consideration.
The success of Washington and Lee men's tennis is well-documented with the Generals claiming 38 of the 43 overall championships awarded in the sport. Last season, W&L posted wins over Roanoke College (6-0) and Guilford (5-1) to earn a berth in the league final. Hampden-Sydney joined them in the title match following a 5-0 win over the University of Lynchburg and a nail-biting 5-4 decision over final four host Virginia Wesleyan.
Washington and Lee completed its run for the league hardware with a 5-0 win over the Tigers.

The Generals' stay in the NCAA Division III Tournament was not nearly as long as they expected. They traveled down to Atlanta, Ga., and met regional host Emory University in the first round. The third-ranked Eagles posted a 5-0 win to close W&L's season.

Just one entry for the ODAC features in any national or regional ranking by the ITA entering the spring season. W&L's Harry Shepherd is the 17th-rated singles player in the Atlantic South region.

An eye-opening amount of returning All-ODAC talent returns to league courts this spring with 26 of the 31 all-conference honors represented on ODAC rosters. Washington and Lee leads the way with eight honors. Bobby Neuner was an All-ODAC First Team choice at #3 singles and joined Mitchell Thomas as one of two first team #1 doubles tandems. Shepherd and Noah Tapp took home first team #2 doubles laurels. Shepherd, Thomas, and Jack Johnson secured All-ODAC Second Team singles honors at the first, second, and sixth flights, respectively. Thomas was also the ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Hampden-Sydney chimes in with six returning honors. Clark Cummings was a first team choice at #5 singles and one-half of the first team #3 doubles team. Brothers Matthew and Michael Moody were first team #1 doubles honorees, while Grayson Burns took home second team recognition at #4 singles and #2 doubles.
Virginia Wesleyan and reigning ODAC Coach of the Year Marty Perry feature five returning honors. Timothy Tep and Nick Gunther earned first team accolades at #2 and #4 singles, respectively. Anthony Wilson was a second team choice at #5 singles and joined Tep for second team #3 doubles recognition.
Bridgewater and Guilford each feature three all-conference honors. The Eagles are led by Canon Secord, the reigning ODAC Player and Rookie of the Year. He earned first team honors at #1 singles and second team laurels at #1 doubles with returning teammate Matthew Gordon. Guilford welcomes back Elijah Gregory, who was a first team selection at #2 singles and joined Mason Robb at second team #1 doubles.
The remaining All-ODAC returner sports Randolph-Macon colors. Grant Sarver registered second team recognition at #1 singles.

The 2020 spring season is underway with non-conference action. The first ODAC match is slated for Friday, February 21. The ODAC Tournament is set to begin Wednesday, April 29, with quarterfinal action at the four highest seeds. The semifinals and finals will be held at Randolph-Macon on Saturday and Sunday, May 2-3.
