FOREST, Va. --- Virginia Wesleyan University and Washington and Lee University each earned six all-conference awards with the Marlins and Bridgewater College garnering two special individual honors each to headline the 2021 All-ODAC Men's Tennis Awards.
Bridgewater junior Canon Secord collected ODAC Player of the Year laurels, while teammate and classmate Matthew Gordon received ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year recognition from the conference's athletic communications personnel. Virginia Wesleyan mentor Marty Perry was tabbed the ODAC Coach of the Year by his peers, while fellow Marlins Felix Bevc was named ODAC Rookie of the Year.
Much has changed since the last round of men's tennis All-ODAC awards two seasons ago, but there are a few players on this season's chart that earned recognition in 2019. Secord not only earned his second straight ODAC Player of the Year award, but he appears on the All-ODAC First Team at #1 singles for a second time. He was also an All-ODAC Second Team pick with Gordon at #1 doubles in 2019. Secord earned the same position at #1 doubles with Nick Kiser this year. Gordon earned second team recognition with Gabe Elder at #2 doubles this season.
Washington and Lee senior Noah Tapp, who is first team at #5 singles this year, was one part of the first team #2 doubles tandem (with Harry Shepherd) in 2019. Virginia Wesleyan senior Anthony Wilson was one half of the second team #3 doubles pairing (with Timothy Tep) two seasons ago. This year, he and partner Henry West earned first team honors at #2 doubles.

Secord, a junior from Harrisonburg, Va., put together a perfect 13-0 singles record, all from the top flight, as he collected his second straight ODAC top player award. That mark included a 9-0 run thru ODAC play. Secord was leading his singles match in the ODAC Tournament as well, but the result was determined before that match could be finished in the Eagles quarterfinal setback at W&L. Secord added a 10-4 showing in all doubles matches. He and Nick Kiser earned All-ODAC Second Team laurels at #1 doubles after posting a 6-2 record together. They were 4-1 in conference matches. Secord and Gordon went 4-2 playing together, including 2-2 in league.
Perry completed his sixth year guiding the Virginia Wesleyan tennis programs as he serves as the Director of Tennis for both the Marlins men's and women's teams. This is the third overall and second straight ODAC top coaching award for the former three-time national coach of the year from his time at the University of Chicago, pairing this honor with those earned in 2016 and 2019. Perry led the Marlins to the second seed in the ODAC Tournament with an 8-1 league mark in addition to a 10-11 overall record in dual matches. They finished as runner-up to Washington and Lee. Perry owns a 199-159 (.556) record as a men's coach, including 61-48 (.560) mark at VWU. Overall, he boasts a 406-288 (.585) career collegiate record including 103-91 (.531) as a Marlin.
Bevc, a first-year from Frankfurt Am Main, Germany, put together a strong campaign to open his collegiate career. Bevc went 11-8 overall in singles play as he participated in 19 of the Marlins 21 matches. He went 9-0 from the #2 ladder position and was 8-1 in conference play. In doubles action, Bevc and partner Mitchell Perry went 14-7 in top flight matches. They were 8-1 in league play, helping them earn an All-ODAC First Team nod at #1 doubles.
Gordon, a junior from Waynesboro, Va., shines both on and off the court for the Eagles. In the classroom, Gordon maintains a 3.90 grade point average as an applied physics major. The two-time All-ODAC Academic Team honoree earned ITA Scholar-Athlete honors in 2020. He served as the men's tennis representative for Bridgewater's SAAC and is a member of the Philomanthes Society (scholastic) and Alphi Chi (academic excellence) national honor society.
On the court, Gordon is now a two-time All-ODAC honoree after picking up second team #1 doubles laurels with Secord in 2019 and second team #2 doubles recognition with Gabe Elder this year. Gordon went 10-4 overall in doubles play this season, joining Elder for a 6-2 posting at #2 doubles. He and Secord went 4-2 together, all at the #1 ladder position. In singles matches, Gordon went 4-9 overall with each contest at the #2 position.
