Lee, a senior from Radnor, Pa., went 5-1 last week as Roanoke went 2-1 as a team. Lee, who is 12-1 this season from the No. 2 singles position, went 3-0 from the second slot this past week as he posted victories against Kyle Gatti from Greensboro College (6-2, 6-0), Drew Tomajczyk from Virginia Wesleyan (6-0, 6-1) and Dan Phung from Randolph College (6-1, 6-0). In doubles play, Lee and teammate Matthew Kessley went 2-1 with wins coming against Greensboro and Randolph in the top flight. The duo’s only loss, the first for Lee in his last eight doubles matches, came to Virginia Wesleyan.
Men's Tennis Honor Roll
Peter Hawkins, Bridgewater College
- (Sr., 1S, 3D - Silver Spring, Md.)
Hawkins led the Eagles to conference wins over H-SC and R-MC with
two wins at No. 1 singles and two wins at No. 3 doubles. In singles
play, Hawkins won both matches in straight sets, losing a total of
just six games (won 6-1, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-2). He teamed with Sam
Churchill at No. 3 doubles to win matches by scores of 8-0 and
8-2.
Matt Nelson, Emory & Henry - (Sr.,
3S / 1D - Galax, Va. / Galax HS)
Nelson was 4-0 on the week as he led the Wasps to a pair of ODAC
routs over Lynchburg (8-1) and Guilford (7-2). He only dropped one
game at #3 singles, winning 6-0, 6-0 on Saturday vs. Lynchburg and
coming through with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Guilford Sunday. For the
year, Nelson is 11-0 in dual singles matches and is 10-3 at #1
doubles alongside Adam Henderson.
Ben Nelson, Guilford College - (Sr, 6 -
Charlotte, N.C.)
Nelson went 2-0 in his lone action of the week, which came in
Guilford's loss at Emory & Henry. He recorded a 9-8 win
at #6 singles and teamed with Turner Votipka for a 9-7 win at #2
doubles.
Matt Karvelas, Lynchburg College - (SR,
#1 - Arlington, VA)
Karvelas picked up one of two points for the Hornets against
Hampden-Sydney, teaming with Tyler Long for an 8-3 victory in #3
doubles. He then got the only score for LC when the team traveled
to Emory & Henry, winning a hard-fought #1 singles match
6-7(7-3), 7-6(7-0), 12-10. He has won three of his last four ODAC
matches at the top singles flight.
Tom Lewis, Randolph-Macon College - (FR,
- Charlottesville, VA)
Lewis picked up three wins this week against Randolph College and
Bridgewater College. Against Randolph, Lewis blanked his #6 singles
opponent with a 6-0, 6-0 victory. He then went on to win his #3
doubles match with partner Jody Cox, 8-0. In the loss to
Bridgewater, Lewis picked up the only R-MC point by winning his #6
singles match, 6-0, 1-0. This week, Lewis did not allow his
opponents to score a single point.
Graham Wilson, Virginia Wesleyan College
- (First Year, 1st - Newport News, Va.)
In the Marlins only action of the week, Graham posted a 6-0, 6-0
win at #1 singles over Roanoke’s Matthew Kessler. He
and teammate Drew Tomajczyk, ranked #10 in the ITA’s
South/Southeast Region, won 8-4 over Kessler and James Lee at #1
doubles. Wilson is 21-5 in 2012-13, ranking him fourth among
the best singles records in VWC history.
