Washington and Lee Falls to Mount Union in NCAA First Round

LANCASTER, Pa. --- Senior attacker Katherine Doraty scored five goals to lead the Mount Union women's lacrosse team to an 11-10 win over 17th-ranked Washington and Lee in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Tylus Field at Franklin & Marshall.

The Generals (13-6) jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 2:08 into the contest after junior midfielder Olivia Sisson (Great Falls, Va. / Langley) scored an unassisted goal.

The Raiders (16-3) responded with a four-goal run to make the score 4-1. However, junior attacker Sara Holland (Houston, Texas / M.B. Lamar) cut the advantage to 4-2 after she found the back of the net off of a feed from senior attacker Melissa Coggins (St. John's, Fla. / Bartram Trail) at the 11:51 mark.

Mount Union ended the first half on another 4-0 run, with Doraty scoring three times to take an 8-2 advantage into the intermission.

The Raiders opened up the second half with a goal from senior midfielder Emily Bergert (9-2), but the Blue and White rallied and cut the lead to 9-7 after junior midfielder Hollis Tardy (Dallas, Texas / The Hockaday School) capped a five-goal run with 19:52 on the clock. Tardy tallied two goals for W&L in the spurt.

Senior midfielder Kolbie Haines scored a free position goal to make the score 10-7 at the 15:51 mark, however, first-year midfielder Haley Tucker (Manakin-Sabot, Va. / St. Catherine's School) beat junior keeper Nikki Bonaduce with 8:32 remaining in the game off of a free position shot.

Doraty struck again with 3:41 on the clock off of an assist from Bergert to increase the Raiders' lead to 11-8, but Tucker scored the last two goals of the contest to reach the final margin of 11-10.

Mount Union held a 12-11 edge in draw controls, and W&L held an advantage in shots (20-17) and in ground balls (14-10).

First-year Ellie Aburn (Towson, Md. / Notre Dame Preparatory) and sophomore Hannah Wiltshire(Wilton, Conn. / Wilton) split time in goal for the Generals, with Wiltshire stopping three shots. Bonaduce played the entire contest for the Raiders and finished with five saves.

Tucker paced the Blue and White with three goals, while Tardy and Sisson recorded two goals apiece.

Doraty's five goals led Mount Union, and Haines registered three goals and one assist.

With the loss, W&L ends its season with a 13-6 overall record. The Generals captured the program's 17th conference championship and made its 16th appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
