Generals Fly Past Comets in NCAA Women's Lax Second Round

LEXINGTON, Va. --- The second-ranked Washington and Lee University women's lacrosse team advanced to the round of 16 in the NCAA DIII Women's Lacrosse National Championships with a 22-5 win over Capital University on Sunday. 

In the first meeting between the Generals (19-1) and Comets (11-5), the Blue and White put two scores on the board in the first three minutes of action and didn't give up the lead for the remainder of the game. 

Capital answered and scored one minute later but the Generals rattled off nine straight to take an 11-1 advantage with 10:29 on the clock in the second quarter. W&L put seven of those on the scoreboard in the opening stanza, tallied eight in the second and split seven goals over the second half. 

Hanna Bishop (Bronxville, N.Y. / Bronxville) led all scorers with four goals and two assists for six points and is up to the third-most points in a single season with 80. 

Allie Schwab (Bryn Mawr, Pa. / Harriton) added a hat trick and two helpers for five points. Sophomore Claire Horner (Richmond, Va. / St. Catherine's) also recorded three scores, a career-high for the attacker. 

The Generals outshot the Comets 38-16 and had an 18-10 advantage on groundballs. On the circle, W&L dominated the draw with a 22-9 advantage and Shannon Timoney (Mendham, N.J. / West Morris) controlled 10 of them, a career-high for the junior. 

W&L registered 11 assists, the second most of any game this season and 27 players saw the field. 

Defender Eugenie Rovegno (Duxbury, Mass./ Duxbury) and Sam Van Belle (Lebanon, N.J. / North Hunterdon) each tallied three caused turnovers and Rovegno scooped up five groundballs for the Blue and White. For the tenth time this season, W&L's defense held the opponent to five goals or less. 

Goalkeepers Caroline Kranich (State College, Pa. / Mercersburg) and Stefanie Chiguluri (Nashville, Tenn. / Harpeth Hall) evenly split six total saves; Kranich faced 11 shots in the first three quarters and Chiguluri saw five in the final fifteen minutes of action. 

Grace Osborn recorded three of the Comets' five goals and Ava Vendetti and Luci Kanowsky added the remaining two. Emily Serafinchon and Meg Garcia split time in cage for the Comets and recorded five and four saves each, respectively. 

The Generals advance to the round of 16 and will take on ninth-ranked Gettysburg on Saturday. A hosting location has yet to be announced.
