Lynchburg Travels to Ithaca for Next Round
LYNCHBURG, VA - Sophomore forward Katie Santos (Cheltenham,
VA/Bishop Ireton) scored 13 minutes after intermission to give the
Lynchburg College women's soccer team a 1-0 win Sunday over Emory
University in the second round of the 2008 Division III Tournament.
The Hornets advance into the tournament's Sweet 16 for the
second consecutive season, and will face Ithaca College next
weekend at a date, time and location to be determined.
The Eagles controlled much of the first half play, out-shooting LC
9-3 with a few good scoring chances. Lynchburg picked up its
play out of the break, and broke through at the 58 minute mark.
Sophomore forward Betsy Kwiatkowski (Mount Jackson,
VA/Stonewall Jackson) beat her Eagle defender on the end line and
centered the ball for Santos, who connected for the game's only
goal. The Hornet defense held Emory to limited scoring
opportunities in the second half.
Sophomore keeper Jackie Bader (Fort Washington, MD/Bishop Ireton)
made seven saves in net for LC, including five first-half stops.
Sarah Wilkerson made one stop, and defender Emily Rubin turned away
a late Hornet chance at an insurance goal, heading the ball out of
danger in the goal mouth.
Emory held a 14-11 advantage in shots, while Lynchburg was awarded
three of the game's four corner kicks. The physical game had 31
fouls and two yellow cards.
Emory ends its season with a 16-4-1 mark, while the Hornets are
21-0-3 heading into the weekend's play. Ithaca defeated Roger
Williams this afternoon 2-0, and the winner of the The College of
New Jersey and top-ranked Williams College (MA) game will play the
Ithaca/LC winner.
