Cunningham and Leary Collect Individual Accolades
SALEM, Va. --- Washington and Lee University
earned two of the four individual awards and placed four players on
the first team in the 2009 All-ODAC Women's Soccer Awards.
Generals' goalkeeper Emily Leary was pegged Player of the Year,
while Neil Cunningham was named Coach of the Year.
Randolph-Macon College forward Erin Hauser collected Rookie of the
Year honors and Eastern Mennonite University's defender Mary Dunn
won the ODAC/Farm Bureau Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.
Leary, a sophomore, started 18 out of the Generals' 20 games this
season. Leary registered a 0.49 goals-against average and a
.850 save percentage to rank her second in the conference in both
categories. She has made 51 saves this season, and has
allowed only nine goals on the way to recording a league-best 12
shutouts.
Cunningham enjoys his third top ODAC coaching honor with the
last coming in 2002. This season, Cunningham led his Generals
to their first conference crown since 2003 on penalty kicks, 3-2,
after tying Virginia Wesleyan College, 0-0, in the ODAC title
game. The Generals currently own a 16-1-3 overall record and
a 9-0-2 mark in conference play and now prepare to host a set of
first and second round contests in the NCAA Division III Women's
Soccer Tournament. Washington and Lee opens with Christopher
Newport on Saturday at 11:00 a.m., while Lynchburg and Catholic
kick off at 1:30 p.m. in Lexington.
Hauser made an immediate impact on the Yellow Jackets' field this
year. She started every game and led the conference with 32
points on 13 goals and six assists. Her 13 goals rank third
in the league, while her six assists are tied for fourth.
Hauser's Rookie of the Year honor marks the first for any
Randolph-Macon woman soccer player.
Dunn, a senior, was successful both on and off of the soccer
field. She started every game this year as a member of the
Royals' defense. Additionally, she dished out one helper. For
her career, Dunn posted three goals and registered two
assists. A nursing major with a 3.97 cumulative grade-point
average, Dunn was also named to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine
Academic All-District 3 First Team, as announced by the College
Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
