Heads List of 11 All-Region Honorees

KANSAS CITY, Kans. --- Lynchburg College senior forward Betsy Kwiatkowski was recently named a 2010 Second Team NSCAA/Performance Subaru All-American.  Kwiatkowski also headlines 11 ODAC student-athletes who were named to the South Atlantic All-Region Teams, including four on the first team.  Hornets’ head coach Todd Olsen was named the South Atlantic Coach of the Year.

A native of Mount Jackson, Va., Kwiatkowski earned All-America honors for the first time in her career and was tabbed to the All-Region First Team for the fourth time.  She registered a conference-best 47 points this season.  The ODAC Player of the Year, she led the league with 17 assists and was second in goals scored with 15. A starter in every game this season, Kwiatkowski notched four game-winning goals and helped lead Lynchburg to their ninth ODAC title with a win over Virginia Wesleyan College in the championship game.

The 2010 ODAC Coach of the Year, Olsen’s Hornets finished the season with an 18-3-2 record following its tenth appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Hornets captured their ninth ODAC title with an overtime win over Virginia Wesleyan.

The ODAC was represented on each of three NSCAA South Atlantic All-Region Teams.  Kwiatkowski was joined on the first team by teammates Jackie Bader and Brittany Klippstein as well as Virginia Wesleyan’s Kelly Higgins and Roanoke’s Jessica Welfare.  The Marlin duo of Courtney Whorten and Jessica Edelman, along with LC’s Shelley Hoath, made up the conference’s second team contingent.  VWC’s Brittany Moseley, RC’s Maya Kantor and LC’s Jessica Gonzalez were third team selections.

Bader, a senior goalkeeper from Fort Washington, Md., earned First Team All-Region accolades for the first time in her career.  She was a third team selection in 2007.  A Second Team All-ODAC pick, Bader started 19 games this season, allowing only nine goals while registering a 0.50 goals-against average.

A junior midfielder from Springfield, Va., Klippstein started every game this season.  A First Team All-ODAC honoree, she recorded 18 goals (#1 in the ODAC), including a school-record tying five tallies against Guilford in late October.  That outburst was part of a personal five-game scoring streak through the conference title game.  She collected 11 goals spanning the final two regular season and three ODAC postseason contests, racking up 23 total points in the process.

Higgins, a senior defender from Berlin, Md., started 19-of-21 games as a member of a defensive unit that registered a 0.64 goals-against average.  A First Team All-ODAC pick, she also recorded one goal for the Marlins.

A senior midfielder from Roanoke, Va., Welfare was tabbed to the all-region team for the third-straight year.  She is the first women’s soccer player at Roanoke to earn four all-region accolades, adding a D3kicks.com all-region honor to her résumé as a freshman. A four-year First Team All-ODAC choice, Welfare finished with six goals, including three game-winners, three assists, and 15 points.  

VWC’s Whorten and Edelman were both secured First Team All-ODAC selections in prelude to their Second Team All-Region honors.  Whorten, a senior midfielder from Hagerstown, Md., was a key starter for the Marlins registering three goals, including one game-winner, and four assists.  A sophomore forward hailing from Voorhees, N.J., Edelman started 19-of-21 games and finished second on the team in scoring with 18 points on seven goals, including three game-winners, and four assists.  

Hoath, a sophomore defender from Alexandria, Va., started all 23 games this season, while scoring six goals to go with one assist. She helped anchor a LC defense that yielded only 14 goals all season.  

Moseley, a senior defender from Midlothian, Va., was a key member of the Marlins’ defensive unit that allowed just 14 goals.  She also earned First Team All-ODAC honors this season.  Kantor, a freshman defender from New York, N.Y., was a member in the Maroons backfield that tied a school-record with 11 shutouts.  She also found the back of the net once.  A sophomore midfielder from Springfield, Va., Gonzalez started 21 games this season, and notched five goals, including three game-winners, and two assists.
