Lynchburg to Face Montclair State in Second Round on Sunday

LYNCHBURG, VA – Dessi Dupuy scored the game's only tally Saturday night as the Lynchburg College women's soccer team defeated Frostburg State University (MD) 1-0 in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Division III Tournament on Shellenberger Field.

The Hornets had a couple of good scoring chances in the first half. Bobcat keeper Katie Smith made a diving save on a good LC opportunity midway through the first half, and a header from Lynchburg junior Angela Bosco went just wide 10 minutes later.

The game remained scoreless until midway through the second half. Dupuy finally found the back of the net at the 67:38 mark. Junior midfielder Jen Snyder hit a streaking Dupuy for a breakaway. Close to five feet from the goal the sophomore forward chipped the ball that the Bobcat keeper got a finger on, but caromed into the net.

Lynchburg dominated the shot totals, firing 23 to Frostburg State's four. The Hornets also led in corner kicks (6-4). Katie Smith made six saves for Frostburg, while Audrey Moore recorded the shutout with one stop.

Frostburg State falls to 14-4-3, while Lynchburg improves to 20-0-3.

Montclair State defeated Averett 3-2 in overtime in the first game of the day at Lynchburg. LC and Montclair State square off Sunday at 5 p.m. for the right to advance to the tournament's round of 16. The Hornets are ranked fifth in the most recent NCAA Division III poll, while the Red Hawks are 13th.
