ODAC Players of the Week - Week 8

FOREST, Va. --- Cross country's regular season ended a week ago and the remaining fall sports are gearing down towards tournament time, but that doesn't mean the performances have slowed. Those earning ODAC weekly awards include (pictured l-r, t-b): Davon Keith from Emory & Henry football, Cedrick Delaney from Shenandoah football, Marli Hayward from Virginia Wesleyan women's soccer, Dylan Ritch from Washington and Lee men's soccer, Mackenzie Shand from Washington and Lee volleyball, Ty Palmer from Guilford men's golf, Ali MacQueen from Washington and Lee women's swimmer, Tommy Thetford from Washington and Lee men's swimming, and Emily Matisons from Bridgewater field hockey.

ODAC Players of the Week

FOOTBALL - DEFENSIVE
Davon Keith, Emory & Henry, So., Defensive End
Keith, a sophomore from Columbia, S.C., helped the Wasps win for the second straight week with a 42-33 result at Bridgewater. Keith was ever-present in the Eagles' backfield, making 6.0 tackles for a loss that cost BC 26 yards of offense. Three of those tackles went down as quarterback sacks, account for 21 of the 26 negative yards. He chipped in four additional quarterback hurries, one of which forced an errant throw that was intercepted and returned for a touchdown. The Wasps' defensive end finished the game with a career-best 14, including 11 solo stops. Keith has racked up 9.5 tackles for a loss the past two contests, helping him to an ODAC-high 18.0 TFLs for the season. His stops behind the line have cost opponents a league-best 85 yards of offense. His 9.5 sacks sit second by a half-sack. Keith has made 46 total tackles on the season.

FOOTBALL - OFFENSIVE
Cedrick Delaney, Shenandoah, Sr., Running Back
Delaney, a senior from Manassas, Va., helped lead the Hornets to their third straight ODAC win, which also marked the first time SU has surpassed the four-win mark (now 5-2) under fourth year head coach Scott Yoder. Delaney racked up 295 all-purpose yards in Shenandoah's 33-28 win over Guilford, contributing to the rushing, receiving and kick return units. He led all ODAC rushers in week eight with 205 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. That total includes a long run of 73 yards and a 35-yard touchdown sprint to open the game's scoring. With Saturday's efforts, Delaney became the Hornets' all-time leading rusher with 3,018 career yards. Against GC, he also caught five passes for 34 yards and added 56 yards on three kick returns. For the season, Delaney is second in the ODAC with 720 yards and seven touchdowns rushing. He leads the conference with 1,297 all-purpose yards.

FIELD HOCKEY
Emily Matisons, Bridgewater, Fr, Forward
Matisons, a freshman from Perth, Australia, picks up her second weekly award of the season after helping to lead Bridgewater to a pair of ODAC victories last week. Twice she hit for game-winners, including the deciding goal in a 3-2 win at cross-town rival Eastern Mennonite. Matisons then had a hand in all four Eagles' goals against Virginia Wesleyan, opening the game's scoring with the first of three tallies while adding an assist. For the season, Matisons is tied for first in the ODAC in assists (7), fourth in points (29) and fourth in goals scored (11).

MEN'S GOLF
Ty Palmer, Guilford, Sr.
Palmer, a senior from Kernersville, N.C., picks up his first weekly award of the season after finishing second at the O'Brian-Jensen Memorial hosted by Guilford. Palmer carded rounds of 71 and 67 to finish at 4-under par 138 after 36 holes on the 6,763-yard par-71 track at the Sedgefield Dye Course in Greensboro, N.C. His totals over 36 holes and his second round 67 mark personal season-lows. His final tally sits as one of the lowest overall scores in the 29-year history of the event. Palmer's efforts helped Guilford to second among 15 teams at 574 (292-282). Palmer is currently fifth in the ODAC with a 74.4 average.

MEN'S SOCCER
Dylan Ritch, Washington and Lee, So., Midfielder/Forward
Ritch, a sophomore from Mint Hill, N.C., helped lead the Generals to a pair of wins last week, returning Washington and Lee to solo first in the ODAC standings. Ritch dropped in a pair of goals in a 4-1 win at Emory & Henry, scoring both the second and third goals of the game. He followed that by opening the stat sheet against Randolph with his third goal of the week, propelling the Generals to a 2-0 win over Randolph. For the season, Ritch is second in the ODAC in both points (29) and goals scored (12).

MEN'S SWIMMING
Tommy Thetford, Washington and Lee, Jr.
Thetford, a junior from Birmingham, Ala., continued his strong start to the new season with his second straight weekly award. He helped the Generals defeat Randolph-Macon, 162-96, in a dual meet. Thetford bettered his previous season-best time in the 50-yard freestyle, winning the event in 0:21.46. He also claimed the 100-yard freestyle in 0:47.89, and the 200-yard freestyle in 1:46.19. He also helped W&L to a victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay in a time of 1:28.13.

WOMEN'S SWIMMING
Ali MacQueen, Washington and Lee, Fr.
MacQueen, a freshman from Memphis, Tenn., contributed to four winning swims as the Generals defeated Randolph-Macon, 167-89, in a dual meet. MacQueen won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 0:24.78. She then doubled the distance with a less than doubled time as she won the 100-yard freestyle in 0:54.21. MacQueen helped her teammates touch the wall first in both the 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relays, registering times of 1:49.26 and 1:40.23, respectively.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
Marli Hayward, Virginia Wesleyan, Fr., Forward
Hayward, a freshman from Haymarket, Va., helped Virginia Wesleyan remain in the top-three in the ODAC standings entering the final week in the Marlins 1-0-1 week. After aiding the VWC attack in a 3-2 win over Bridgewater, Hayward rescued a point from the Marlins' trip to Washington and Lee with both goals in a 2-2 draw. She brought the game to level at 1-1 with her tally in the 25th minute and then put VWC ahead, 2-1, in the 57th minute. For the season, Hayward leads the Marlins and is seventh in the ODAC with seven goals. Her 14 points also lead the squad and sit 12th in the league.

VOLLEYBALL
Mackenzie Shand, Washington and Lee, Sr., Middle Blocker
Shand, a senior from Saline, Mich., posted a solid week on both sides of the ball in Washington and Lee's 2-1 showing, becoming the program's all-time leader in career blocks in the process. In a 3-0 victory on the road at Emory & Henry, Shand hit .500 with eight kills, an assist and four blocks. She chipped in three more total blocks with four kills in a 3-0 setback to nationally 20th-ranked Christopher Newport. Shand capped her week with seven kills and a .778 attack percentage to go with four assists and six more rejections to run her weekly total to 13 in a 3-0 win over Penn State-Harrisburg. She now has 418 blocks in her career, which ranks eighth all-time in ODAC history. For the season, Shand leads the ODAC in attack percentage (.385), total blocks (121), block assists (91) and blocks per set (1.36). Her 30 solo blocks sit second.
